at least for mr OP it is only temporary, for overseas peeps staying/living here it is a real pain since NZ pubs etc don't accept foriegn driving licenses of any kind (even UK ones which or basically identical to ours), and who wants to carry their passport on a night out? I wouldn't, especially If I am in a foriegn country.

Expired documents are not legally recognised. They'd have to refuse you on that.

And talisker, what are you on about? Please tell me it's not one of those crackpot mandatory microchipping conspiracy theories.

jamesjc25: As per the Sale of Liquor Act you are required to present approved PHOTO ID when requested.

This maybe a

CURRENT New Zealand Drivers Licence
CURRENT Passport
CURRENT HANZ 18+ Card

NO photo then no go

Unless the outlet wishes to risk their licence you will need one of these.

CURRENT New Zealand Drivers Licence, so it doesn't actually say a photo licence. A temporary licence still is a current drivers licence isn't it?

Extra emphasis put on the PHOTO ID as quoted by jamesjc25, as a temp licence does not have a photo it can not, by definition, be photo id. Current yes, photo id no.

Slightly OT: when I was 17 I got my new licence, as it was of little use (was not driving at the time) I didn't really look at it. A week before my 18th Birthday I went to open a bank account and discovered that the DOB on the licence was incorrect, it was for a year earlier than my actual DOB. Never got the chance to even use it before I was legitimately 18 Cry What a waste...

I work as a bouncer, so I can actually answer this.

It's entirely up to the discretion of the bar staff. Personally, If you have a temporary license, plus multiple other forms of ID in your name to back it up, I will generally accept it. (For instance, Paper license + Student ID + credit card/eftpos card/firearms license all in your name etc)

I will also allow the use of expired passports (or unexpired passports with kiddie photos still on them!) with extra ID as mentioned above.

I will sometimes also allow foreign drivers licenses, depending on the person.

But as I say its entirely a discretionary thing. Unless you have one of the holy trinity (Current Passport, NZ Drivers License, or HANZ 18+ card with a CURRENT photo of you) you will most likely run into problems if you appear to be under 25.

I am a Bar Manager some places may accep it with supporting but they will do so at there own risk.

The law says it must be photo and current. So if the person who presented the I'D turns out to be under age the bar/store will have no defense.

We do not accept anything that is not approved. Only:
Current photo NZ drivers license
Current passport

We make no exceptions because it is simply impossible to be fair to everyone if you vary the rules for some and not everyone.

Also if you are going to vary the rules why bother having them in the first place?

A couple of annoyed people because they didn't have the correct I'D and the few $ we missed from them is a small price to laid compared to the consequences of a successfull prosecution by the DLA
Current HANZ 18+ card

Sorry about the post above.

It appears I am not good at typing and walking Lol.

Any way just to clarify exactly what the law says:

Meaning of term evidence of age document
(1) For the purposes of this Act, the term evidence of age document means a document specified in subsection (2) that?
(a) Contains a photograph of the person to whom the document is issued; and
(b) Contains information that enables the age of the person to be determined.
(2) For the purposes of subsection (1), a document is?
(a) A New Zealand passport; or
(b) An overseas passport; or
(c) A driver licence issued under the Land Transport Act 1998; or
(d) A document in the prescribed form issued by a specified person, organisation, body corporate, Government department, Crown agency, or statutory board.
(3) For the purposes of subsection (2),?
(a) The term prescribed means prescribed by the Minister by notice in the Gazette:
(b) The term specified means specified by the Minister by notice in the Gazette.

----- Copied from The Sale of Liquor Act 1989 - Accessed at http://www.legislation.govt.nz/act/public/1989/0063/latest/DLM165334.html#DLM165334

Case law dictates that the ID needs to be current and in a condition where it is likely to have been altered

Further clarification:
Whilst this is the law many establishments may choose to accept expired ID or non approved if you can present other forms of ID with the same name ect..

This is their choice and their own risk. You will have success at some places and failure at others.

As Lias said if you look under 25 you will probably have some difficulty.

Cheers

Easy enough to get a $20 HANZ 18+ card, I'd have thought.

I've always considered that the "multiple documents in same name"  is resonable belief under Section 155 (4), but if I have any doubts I refuse, with the option for them appealing to the licensee if he's around at the time.
