What are backhaul costs for these products like and how do they work? Are they per tail for a certain mbps on a 95th percentile between 2 points or somthing? E.g. if I had a customer in Wellington and wanted handover in Auckland and that customer was on VDSL2 and doing 200GB per month bursting mainly at night.

NBR has added a paywalled article called Boo, hiss - VDSL turbocharged copper broadband will get whacked with special charges. Does anyone know what this is about or know what the charges are?

it just has an interview with Chris quin, Telecom CEO, who says that altough the price chorus charges for VDSL is/will be the same as ADSL, there is still a hefty install fee and the modems are more expensive. this means either a high(er) upfront charge, or an incremental charge ontop of the monthly fee. They didnt go into any specific numbers though.

Perhaps its referring to the usual full install charge for VDSL, which had been over $100 more than the comparable ADSL2+ install, despite the fact that it is the same master filter being installed. If Chorus (or the ISPs) are going to take a hard line of requiring full installs rather than DIY then I guess that could be seen as a change in install fees (the actual fee hasn't changed but everyone is now required to pay it?)

Tbh I can't imagine a mainstream ISP like Telecom supporting DIY VDSL, I'd expect them to make a Chorus installed master filter mandatory.

As they should! To be fair I believe master filter installs should be mandatory on ALL xDSL installs

Ahh OK, well that's fair enough. So it's not a set of additional fees from Chorus, just what one ISP is doing.

Sure, in principle; but in practice it gets complicated

I'm pretty sure Chorus (and therefore the RSPs) won't have a way of knowing who has a filter or not without sending a technician out to the premises to find it (they might have a list of ones that they have installed, but not of 3rd party installs). Average DSL Joe won't have a clue if he has a filter or not. So by making a filter mandatory, you are in effect making a technician callout mandatory even if the user already has a professionally installed filter.

its both. the install fee is a chorus charge, and ISPs can choose topass this onto the customer or not. Telecom is saying that this fee is much higher than normal and so unlikely to be absorded and instead passed onto the customer eiuther via an upfrontpayment or small incremental monthly charge.
the otherpart to it is the more expensive modem required for VDSL, which isn't a chorus charge, but is still an extra cost the ISP will need to incur and thus pass onto the customer

Line attenuation Down/Up: 16.0/24.5

Chorus coverage map says ok but with these stats chance of getting VDSL = 0.0?

nope it took 5 minutes from the bloke at the cabinet turning my ADSL off and connecting VDSL and me connecting my Fritz box ,putting in the new settings and on the internet .And i was the first one connected on the cabinet for VDSL 2 months after being available .

Common sense is not as common as you think.

Install prices are changing as part of this new pricing. Since I've had no confirmation from Chorus as to whether this is public information I won't be posting it here however.

Umm yup. I know of two ISPs that dropped their pricing and if you private message us I'm happy to sign you onto our new (July 1) rates.

Mmmm, I know that Voyager and HD have dropped their rates for VDSL2 already, theres not any need for secret squirrel stuff really! I believe that both providers have it available on their website to purchase right now at the reduced rates (starting at $55.00 per month) feel free to check them out.
