Just helping complete the post/story - Terrible Talk now put into liquidation.

Maybe this will give Mr Whale time to focus on his supercomputer "Zach" - https://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=48&topicid=230715

My mum has been with TT for the last 3 years or so. VOIP home phone and ADSL2 internet. If I recall correctly, there were a few hiccups during the setup process, and the service has been unreliable at times. However, on the whole it has been perfectly adequate for her needs. She also hasn't received any invoices since about the second month.

Who are they actually using as a service provider?

Linux: So free service?

Yes. I think she/we paid $150 or so for a router and phone, and then a few bucks for landline-to-cell calls. The rest was free.

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Free setup code: R587125ERQ6VE. Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

No wonder they have gone bust!

No idea. I can tell you the phone number prefix is/was 06 929, which - according to this - suggests some connection to Vocus. But perhaps that is spurious? Assuming the connection is still working I'd be happy to try to collect additional info if you can tell me what to look for.

So, while Terrible Talk reckon they listened to Geekzone, it might have been good if they had listened to Inland Revenue as well:
