Athlonite: just as a further question does Chorus use G.Vector

Not that I'm aware of. Australia's NBN FTTN uses VDSL2 with vectoring, and if your modem doesn't support vectoring you won't get sync at all. I think with vectoring, all the CPEs need to support it or it doesn't work.

Given the UFB rollout plans to cover most (if not all) of the VDSL coverage, I can't see the point in upgrading to support vectoring.

When my bandplan change first happened my ping went from 6 to 23 and my wireless speeds didn't match my wired speeds (normally they're within 10%), but after about a week it settled and now my ping is 5 and wireless and wired speeds are very close again - both in the low 40's.

Please dont use WiFi to compare to anything. It has 0 relevance ;)
Probably coincidence  :)

Yes I used WiFi to get that current speedtest result of 25/10, I used to get 40/10 on WiFi before though. Also wired is at 30/10 now and used to be 42/10.

Maybe so. But my wi-fi got a lot closer to my cabled speed once my ping settled. Just pointing out my experience was similar to the previous poster :)

You got me curious, and my cellphone with single band wireless n (max 64 megabit i think?)  can't get full vdsl rates downloading, but always has uploading... until
this 10 megabit cap got removed.  I still have slightly higher ping.  And it's doing around 42/22 to 42/25.  It seems the upload is a bit unstable.

I don't think it's necessarily co-incindental.  back on adsl2 I did testing and found that often wifi would give worse speeds especially to further away destinations partially
because my phone didn't have much memory, and it seems that the TCP window sizes were small meaning that hardly any data could be in transit at once.

It's even more the case when you get packet loss that having less latency can improve throughput although that's usually more of a factor when wifi is used at range.

BTW, the upgrade is not yet complete. There is 1 ISAM yet to be upgraded to 998 and a single digit number of ISAMs to be upgraded to the latest software still. Guess who's on that 1 VDSL enabled ISAM that's still on 997.

Go on. Guess.

Maybe you shouldn't have suggested that they wait!

It's the irony really... I would never suggest that they do anything for my specific benefit, but leaving me to literally last... Even the Chorus people I spoke to could see the irony in it :-)

It's fine... It'll be a nice Xmas present!

Cheers -N

I was going to say earlier that it would be you and put money on it ;).
Thought that would be cruel and jinx it.
Dont worry about me anyway, I got 100/45 stable.

now that I believe the 998 rollout is complete, is there any news about extending the range of VDSL viable areas (particularly as the wholesale cost of the copper connections is increasing by about $3 - which is kind of ironic when I can't get hold of fibre until end of 2019)?

Will a line provisioned as VDSL automatically sync at ADSL if the VDSL is not achievable or does it require a change by chorus via the ISP?

We're watching this and will switch you over as soon as it is available.

It is possible for an ISP to make a special order of "VDSL / ADSL" which means the tech will install the fastest achievable technology. But for standard VDSL orders, when it fails, the ISP will need to place a new ADSL order.
