Tell the landlord that you really need the speed of fiber and if they wont do the install then you will be looking for a new place in the new year. That should get them signing since the costs of re-letting a place are huge.

OtterNZ: Hi all,

Thank you for all your help and advice. I talked to Spark and they refuse to allow the connection without a splitter, and since they've provided me with great service and speeds over the last few years I would like to stay with them.

So, I've been talking to the landlord and they are happy with the modifications that would be made as part of a master splitter install including any new jack point install in the house.

Regards, Craig.

Kinda unfortunate really. You genuinely do not need one and so all you've done is in incur 300 bucks of charges for spark, which basically means it's cost you $300 too, since it is built into the price of the plan.

Even worse, you are now locked into a 12 month contract where the price is about to go up by an unknown amount. And there is nothing you can do about it.

Especially if fiber is available in the area, really ISPs should start saying no to cases where they can get fiber because thats a huge cost for them, and most allow you to migrate to fiber without affecting the term so when you do that, the remainder of that $300 they paid is just wasted.

OtterNZ: Hi All,

BigPipe will allow me to sign up to VDSL without a splitter install.

OtterNZ

The industry standard is for an VDSL master splitter and BigPipe should know better they're just trying to cheap out on a proper install and considering it's an 2"x3.5" little black box I don't see why your landlord has a problem with it if there's room it can be installed inside the etp and never be seen again or inside the wall cavity behind the bt socket

as for speed you'll probably be on an 17a profile and near to maxing it out

We're not trying to cheap out from a proper install - some houses simply don't need a master filter, and it's up to the customer if they feel they need/want one or not (with the help and support of our customer care team too). If a customer gets connected on VDSL and has line or speed issues we recommend installing a master filter but they can get it much cheaper from awesome guys like Coffeebaron than through Chorus.

Why wouldn't we give our customers the option to go elsewhere?

why make it hard don't give them the opportunity to have a bad experience in the first place just make it a part of the install if anything it wont do any harm and in most cases it'll do more good for their connection than not

Because its $300 that anyone who can punch down 2 wires into the back of an RJ45 or RJ12 jack doesn't need to have spent on them. Thats $300 that they will not see if the customer moves to another ISP in a short time because they chose bigpipe for the lack of a term contract.

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Free setup code: R587125ERQ6VE. Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

Not according to bigpipe it's only and I quote from their own FAQ

There is a one-off payment of $199 required for this internal wiring

It's not uncommon for ISPs to subsidise Chorus costs for the benefit of their customers.

That is what they charge.

Other ISPs dont charge anything, you are just paying for it in the higher monthly costs, and being locked into a term. Same as the junk "free" routers they give out.

As richms said above, most of the time the cost for the wiring is bundled in to a cost that an ISP would absorb at the start of your contract with them, and a hefty cancellation fee too.

Spark's offer summary is a good example of this (https://store.spark.co.nz/internet/page/ultravdsloffersummary/#set-up-charge), although I had a quick look at a few other ISPs and they have similar offers/explanations. If you don't want to go in a contract, look how much you look at paying upfront.
