I think the problem may be in where you are expecting to see "Active Sync" show up as a service. From what I am reading, you are looking for it in the settings for your Belkin device, but you should be looking for it on your MDA.

For the Belkin device, all you need to do is enable your COM port (5 or 8). After you have enabled this COM port, open up Microsoft ActiveSync and assign the same COM port.

File-->Connection Settings-->Allow connections to one of the following: (this where you select COM 5 or COM 8, depending on your selection)

After this is done, the rest is done through your MDA. If you go to your COMM Manager, and select "Sync" there is an option in the menu to sync using Bluetooth. When you attempt to do this, the MDA will tell you there isn't a device configured to do this, and would you like to do it now. Say yes and follow the steps. It will search for your laptop and find it. Select it, press next, and it should ask you for a password. You have to enter the password on the MDA (whatever you want) and then enter that same password on your laptop. Once you've done that, the two are paired.

The next screen tells you what services are available. If you get the service "Serial Port," something went wrong. Delete the laptop from your MDA and select the other COM port and try again.

I'm sorry you're having so many problems. I suffered the same fate for many weeks. I hope you get it up and running. When you said you were having problems, I made a special trip into to work to see if my MDA would sync without yet another configuration change. It authenticated when I asked it to sync and everything is fine.

I think the key point here is that you need to most of the configuration work on the MDA. For the Belkin adapter, all you need to do is turn on one of the serial ports. For Active Sync, you just need to associate that port in the connections. The rest of the configuration will occur on the MDA.

Hope this helps!

I completely follow your steps. I have run through them a bunch of times, and I really think it is something to do with the Belkin adaptor. I say that, because none of the services that it offers say "Active Sync", but in the past, it has offered such a service. For some reason, I cannot get that service back on to my laptops' list of services. As you wrote in the step by step approach, if the list of available services comes up on my MDA as serial port, something has gone wrong (moreover, if I pair up serial port, and try to sync again, it says "no paired devices offer activesync, do you want to start a new partnership). But I followed your steps to a T. The only other possibility I can think of is that my Belkin adaptor offeres local services and incoming services. I have matched up my local services (either com 5 or 8) to the active sync, but maybe I should be matching up the incoming services (com 5 or 8) to the active sync com? I am going to uninstall the belkin software and reinstall it, and run through the steps again, but I truly believe that if I can add a bluetooth service called "active sync" on my laptop, then the MDA will pop that service up after I pair the two devices.

There's no Bluetooth Service called "ActiveSync". You should match the Incoming Services defined on your Bluetooth (PC) port to ActiveSync.

If you have two ports, try having just one, to make it simpler when creating the partnership for the software to know which one to use.

Hello again.

Let me clarify my last statement. The service "ActiveSync" does not appear on your laptop or your Belkin adapter. It only appears on your MDA. To make this work, keep the following things in mind:

Your Belkin adapter will only be able to offer Serial Port service (COM 5 or COM 8)
Microsoft ActiveSync can only link this port to its software (again, COM 5 or COM 8)
The MDA must have the service "ActiveSync" available as a service to use

I may be confusing our "Geekzone Admin." If you run through all the steps, the MDA will give you one of two available services:

1. Serial Port
2. ActiveSync

If the only option is "Serial Port," something went wrong in the configuration. The MDA has to have the option "ActiveSync" as a box to check.

If you cannot get "ActiveSync" to show up as a service on your MDA, you cannot proceed. I wish I knew what else could be wrong, but we are dealing with different laptops and Bluetooth adapters. Mine is a Billionton Class 1 USB adapter on an IBM T30 laptop. Maybe our bluetooth adapters have different capabilities? This is more of a question for the Geekzone Admin.

The only other thing that might possibly be an issue is your version of ActiveSync. I am using version 4.1.0 (Build 4841). If you are not using this version, you may need to update your ActiveSync software.

Good Luck!

Roger

I just don't know what it could be. I used this exact same bluetooth pc card adaptor and it activesynced with my old  HP 6315 via bluetooth flawlessly. My MDA just does not seem to want to find active sync on my laptop. If I knew how to add activesync service to my bluetooth adaptor/program on my laptop, things would be solved. If anyone knows how to do this on a Belkin bluetooth PC card/PDA adaptor card, I would love to know! Thanks.

I have a Belkin bluetooth USB adaptor. I couldn't get the active sync service to show up on my MDA as long as I was using the Belkin BT services utilities. I deleted all the partnershipts, uninstalled the Belkin utilities, rebooted pluged in the BT adaptor and then followed the instructions to setup the COM port as described in the Active sync guide. (Using the BT control panel settings in place of the Belkin tool.) Once I created the the COM port in the control panel utility I was able to follow the instructions in this thread to get the sync pairing setup.

I hope this helps!

UPDATE 6/21

I reinstalled the Belkin software to get the DUN setup working, the services that I turned on that seem to work the magic so that my MDA sees the 'ActiveSync' service that is being offered by my PC:
ActiveSync (Will have the same icon as a BT serial port)
File Transfer
PIM Item Transfer
PIM Synchronization

With all of that when I create the pairing from the phone (Discover from the PC first...) I am now offered the 'ActiveSync' service.

The "Device Setup" tool on t-mobiles support page was all the help I needed to get DUN working. I used the config info for the d-link BT connector, the link for the Belkin doc seems to be broken.

I tried to follow your advice Moray, but I just am confused. What is DUN? Because you had success with this, could you tell me step by step what I am supposed to do. I uninstalled everything, and paired from my computer, but nothing! I still got my MDA believing that only serial port was an option. As I see it, I have to convince the MDA that activesync is a bluetooth option on my computer, but how? Sorry for sounding so elementary and basic, but I couldn't really follow your post (not your fault, but mine). Thanks for your help, and look forward to your next directions.

Could you also direct me to the T-Mobile website you were referring to? Thanks.

If your Pocket PC can see a serial port on your computer then you are almost there.

Right-click ActiveSync, select Connection Settings and make sure the COM port selected is the same one defined on your Bluetooth configuration - the one your Pocket PC can see!

After this, delete the pairing on your Pocket PC and create it again. It should connect brifely to the PC and you'd see the ActiveSync icon spin on the system tray. The Pocket PC will then report an ActiveSync connection.

ME TOO!!!
(still trying)

I am trying to use ActiveSync via Bluetooth on my T-Mobile MDA and having great trouble. I can set up a partnership between my PC and the device.

I'm running PC on XPSP2 and using Microsoft Bluetooth utility. I set up the partnership, then set up the Incoming COM Port on my PC (COM4). I set ActiveSync (4.1) on my PC to "allow connections to" COM 4.

But when I try to set up ActiveSync on my PDA, I run into trouble. I go to ActiveSync and then Menu-Connect via Bluetooth. It tells me that there is no partnership with a PC that supports ActiveSync and should I set one up now. I say Yes and then it takes me to the Bluetooth settings where I set up a new partnership. This works fine, but the only service that it allows me to use is "Serial Port". I'm guessing it should have ActiveSync here as an option (??). I then click Save and open the Com Ports. I set up a new Outgoing Port (I set this to Com6-to match the incoming on the PC--is this right?).

But if I try and sync (either from the PDA or from the PC) nothing happens (The PDA has the same message that there is no partnership, and the PC just looks for my PDA but can't find it.)

If anyone has set up a successful partnership and used ActiveSync, I would be very grateful if they could let me know how they did it.

Thanks.

Rich

I'm connecting a Dell Axim x51v to Windows XP SP2 using a Cambridge Silicon Bluetooth with Windows generic bluetooth drivers.

I couldn't get "Activesync" to appear as a service until I found the correct sequence to follow.

After installing the incoming COM port on the PC you need to allow connections to it in ActiveSync before making the connection on the PDA. It is the ActiveSync application that appears to install the "ActiveSync" service for the port, and it does it when you select "Allow connections to one of the following" in "File/Connection settings" (which makes sense I spuppose).

Simply installing the incoming COM port and connecting to it from the PDA without configuring ActiveSync first sometimes showed no service on the PDA and sometimes showed "Serial Port" as a service but necer showed "ActiveSync" as a service.

What I can't figure out is why the machine gets itself in a state where the synchronisation fails for some reason, and then the list of COM ports that you can allow connections to in ActiveSync application doesn't contain the COM port you have allocated to Bluetooth.

ActiveSync is hard coded to limit connections on those ports listed (COM1 through COM9). If your  machine has a configuration problem and the COM ports available are beyond COM9 then you won't be able to use it with ActiveSync, requiring you to remove the ports causing problem and creating the appropriate port.
