Bugger.

Same thing last night, i'm starting to think some kind of electrical interference perhaps from streetlights, although it wouldn't really explain the gradual increase back to good again when there is a bit of temperature in the air.

The rain didnt affect it at all yesterday by the looks of things.

The discs seem to come in batches according to the usage meter usually around between 10-12 at night and then again around 4-5am (ripple perhaps?).

Oh well ask for another pair and new port i spose tho i suspect its closer to my end than at the exchange.

got another modem to try tonight but i doubt it's the drayteks fault.

Just had an interesting chat with tech support...

The default noise margin is set to 3.5db, i asked for 12db to help me out while the root cause is investigated.  of course you cannot have no interleaving with the high margin which i would like if we can get the line running nice.  you tend to need every millisecond you can get when you are playing on overseas servers or have no choice where you play.......

Another tech is being booked to investigate port/pair swappage.

Hmm that doesn't sound right the default is 12dB for Telecom, 3.5dB would be way to low.. I think they must have been talking about a different setting or parameter than the Noise Margin we are talking about.

Coulda been 3-5db, when the dsl has been happiest it was around 4-6db.

so on the more resiliant line profile i will see what happens tonight/tomorrow morning, also the chorus guy has swapped pairs for me too.

this hopefully will nail it.

Ok quick update.

Am on new pair = good

Am on 12db SN profile (modem reports this as 15db SNR (so the 4-6 that it was reporting previous would correspond with a 3.5db profile as per discussion with dude from helpdesk)) = 6mbit sync with very few crcs and about the same atten which would point to around a 2km line.

The tech said the lines around here are multiples and im damned if i can remember from all those years ago at helpdesk if that was the 2 pairs = 3 sets of phone lines trick (which from memeory won't work with adsl) or just lots of joins and varying gauges of copper.

Anyway line stats looked good and no discs so i rang the helpdesk back to find a snr profile that didnt steal all my megabits and got through to a level 1 monkey who said the only people that can change the snr was the technicians at the exchange, so after explaining to him how to do his job he put through an order to i guess the tier 3 guys or whoever has the leet tools.

and thus i wait.

Cheers for all of the advice guys i think its all but nailed now.

From your modem end..

- 12dB is the normal Noise Margin should see on Telecom.
- 15dB or higher means more conservative settings for less stable lines.

Hopefully it all holds together when they put your back on the standard profile, good luck!
