Hello All, thank you so much for all the input and support. My business get incorporated next week. So many ideas have passed through my head, and I'm learning anything is possible with the right software and know-how. I'm in search of something to help me with my next idea.
I came across the Hot Hand products technology from Source Audio. While it is primarily used for guitars, I was hoping to somehow find a way to use it in a way similar to the Kinect. I want to find a way to connect each device to specific track / beat and then create music using the movements of the hand. Eventually I want to have a large group, all wearing a device, and conduct them like an orchestra. POSSIBLE?
Please see link to Hot Hand http://www.sourceaudio.net/products/hothand/hothand_usb.php
That's a cool use of the 3D accelerometers, it's uses the same kind of hardware I described earlier but has some nice software that talks in midi, so can connect to Ableton very easily. The Hot hand is a very compact device, but could you could build your over device like this using arduinos or raspberry pi's that would be a little more bulky.
No sure about copyrights or patents on this but technically it would be a lot easier than kinect as you could use it anywhere. Will a Pi platform a performer could have his/her own sound suit.
The hot hand looks like it has just has one input source, but there isn't much stopping you from growing this to say 4, with wrists and carves wired up. It would not have as much complexity to it's control range but with 4 inputs your would get extra range you desire.
Hello all, it certainly has been a while since I wrote to say hi and update you. Things are coming along. Had a few hiccups with the company, but still moving steadily forward. I could use your help once again... please! When I last wrote I spoke about the Hot Hand® devices I am using in my act. The original concept was to have multiple rings working simultaneously triggering different sounds with my Ableton software. Because of the design of the Hot Hand® I'm limited with the amount of rings I could use at once, a maximum of 4. I believe this is the result of streams crossing, or something like that.
This greatly reduces the effect I'm going for, that being a "band" playing music just using the Hot Hands. However, I NEED to have a minimum of 6-8 devices. Anyway, I'm exploring other options once again. Take a look at the Hot Hand® devices once again and see if you had some suggestions or even something that can work instead... perhaps a Bluetooth device or Arduino devices. Once again, allow me please to send my great thanks and appreciation.
It only has one accelerometer so is limited to one set of x,y,z inputs. You could make a simpler device than the Hot hand, and by using more than one of these you could get the 8 inputs needed.
I think the hot hand would work better if fitted to the knee for playing the guitar for sitting.
But an Arduino nano, bluetooth module, accelerometer and battery would be the basics for one element kit.
It would be a process of building the hardware and then seeing what the data looks like from the hardware and then tuning it to your needs.
There are heaps of options to test out to see what suits you needs.
Awesome, thanks. To help build this device, what type of engineer should I be looking for? When I put a job listing up, what are the basic abilities I should ask for?
Someone experienced in Arduino programming who as worked with accelerometers and bluetooth. I would consider doing it but I already have one and a half projects on the go so could really only advise but would enjoy working on a collaborative project. Not sure how long it would take todo as the project objectives are pretty loose.
