Baahhhhh  NZ is still one of the more expensive locations to buy an iPad.... US, Australia, Hong Kong, Singapore all cheaper!!

Im off to Singapore in a few weeks where the new iPad 32Gb 4G is only NZ$925 versus $1079 here.....

already many complaints about the new Ipad. Apparently gets too hot to hold in bottom left corner.  Maybe a software update will help it run cooler.

Interesting reading.  The Apple discussion thread mostly suggests the new iPad "runs warmer" with a few posts saying Hot!  Always amused how after every Apple product release the Apple bashers always come out of the woodwork!  Of course, any hyped up negativity about Apple provides an attractive news headline!

There is of course a scientific expectation that the new iPad will run warmer / hotter than it's predecessor.  As noted by the various tear-downs (eg. iFixit), the batteries are larger, but delivering the same run-time:
  • While the iPad 2 housed a formidable 25 watt-hour Li-ion battery, the iPad 3 has upped the ante to the tune of 42.5 watt-hours.
  •  Its 3.7 volts and estimated 10 hours of use (9 with cellular data network) are comparable to that of the iPad 2, but we assume the extra 17.5 watt-hours are put to good use powering the extra RAM and greatly improved GPU.
So, the new iPad consumes more power for it's quad core graphics and quad density screen etc.  1.7x the power if we factor the battery capacity difference (based on the same runtime).

Higher power consumption = increased heat dissipation!   So YES, the new iPad is expected to run relatively warmer than the iPad 2.

When they first announced the iPad 3, the first things I thought were the battery life, the recharge time, and, how much hotter this will get.  This is an incredible number of pixels to push around.

But, the heat is a non-issue from what I've read.

Which is unfortunate really.

When the iPad2 runs stone dead cold, why is a little heat unfortunate? Be easier to place on ones bare legs for starters I would imagine.

JB's in Willis St is having a 'special event' friday morning. They're also opening an hour early at 8am. I walk past at that time on my way to work so I'll be stopping by to check the queue.

ALTRON: Which 4g model is NZ getting? (not that it matters)

I'd think the international version?

Your correct. "Not that it matters"  By the time we get LTE here  on the 700 ~ 800 meg band the iPad 6 will be announced..

Dude, what you do with your ipad, on your bare legs, in your own time is your business.....

I should hope so. Cold aluminium has always been problematic!

I don't think the tech in this screen on the horsepower to push its pixels gets enough kudos honestly. If you can't expect a little heat from those components you're deluding yourself.

I must have been lucky as I originally had a white one in my cart as that was all that was showing, then I thought perhaps they black one just wasn't set to available yet so I went back and they had both up so I ended up getting a black one instead.  If it doesn't arrive on release day and there is plenty of stock around I'll probably pick up one in store and see if I can return the one from The Warehouse.

Isn't 16GB going to be too small, as retina display aps are going to be huge in the future. You are going to get apps that are 1GB in size easily. I have already got several 500MB apps on my ipad, and they aren't retina supported.

In short yes... they probably shouldn't have released the "13.7gb" ipad this time around, 32gb is really as small as you will want to go. The  biggest game ive seen on my16gb iphone 4 was Gangstar Miami and i think that was close to 900mb..
