Thanks hio77, tanivula and sbiddle for your suggestions! I have read the DSL one IS capable of 1.3 Gbps so was not even suspecting it could be the problem. We have loved our router, but I will now get Slingshot's router and test what happens before investing a whole bunch in a new 3rd party one. Thanks again!

It is not "capable of 1.3Gbps" - it merely supports 802.11ac 2x2 at MCS9 using a 160MHz channel which delivers a PHY rate of 1.3Gbps over WiFi. This is not something you would ever configure a router to in the real world (there are very limited use cases that you'd ever deploy 160MHz channels with 802.11ac) , and even then because of the way WiFi works it is not possible to actually transfer data at the PHY rate it means maximum MAC layer throughput of a 1.3Gbps connection is around 800Mbps, and real world throughput will be around 700ish Mbps.

Maximum real world WiFi throughput is always around 60% of PHY rates. Ethernet WAN to LAN routing capability is something very different again.

Just because a 3rd party router is expensive does not mean it'll be any good.

thats theoretical wifi speed, in relity wifi speed is less than half that. which is less than a gigabit network conenction.

and none of that has ANYTHING to do with routing a gigabit internet connection.
