johnr: The joys of unlimited internet

Unlimited Internet worked perfectly fine for me when Big Time was around. It comes down to network management, in the end. Also, I have a friend in Spain (I know, I know, its not New Zealand) who gets 10GB ADSL + Unlimited 3G for ?70 and the speeds are excellent for him too.

unlimited 3G please name provider and plan so we can look at the T&Cs

If you are interested 3 mobile in the UK offer unlimited 3G, i was able to pull ~200GB at full speed each month while there on holiday.

Speed is nowhere near as good as any NZ network though, not because of shaping but just the sheer number of users over there.

The joys indeed!
Telecom have no "preference" for bandwidth. Telecom provide internet services using the same regulated Chorus products that Slingshot do. What happens to your speeds once it enters your ISP's network will depend on the bandwidth the ISP has purchased. />

So explain why two telecom connections both get better sync speeds than me who is on Orcon we all go to the same cabinet and all live within 50mtrs of each other ????? they get 17+ Mbps I get 12 if im lucky if that's not some form of favouritism I don't know what is

Their are many many reasons but internal wiring is a good place to start.

Hi,

That may be nothing to do with your provider, it would depend if your line rates are affected too.

If your friends line rates are higher than yours it could be the cable, Jack points, modems etc,

There could also be (Unlikely tho given that you get 12mbps) inductors on the line making your line "longer" that it actually is etc.

The really frustrating thing is that if it is line rates i.e a physical issue you will have a really hard time getting Chorus out to look at is as they will say that 12mbps is not an issue...

Are you 100% sure you are connected to the nearby cabinet??

Cheers,
Joe.

Hi Joe yes I'm sure about the cabinet connection if I weren't I'd still be getting the 2.2Mbps I was getting 2 years ago before they did the switch over

Ok, I guess the next step is to talk to your provider (Again if you have already)
If its not CPE or internal then its either their end (prios or bandwidth) or chorus' either way, they have the power to get it resolved.

Yes the joys of unlimited internet indeed.

Now that I am on the better network it is even faster peak time any time.

and for $101 including a phone line with smart features, are you serious.

For all the people that are having speed issues that are on Slingshot, it is not  Slingshot that is the problem but more likely your phone line, modem, internal wiring the list goes on and international bandwidth (or lack of it) does not affect national speed tests, you should always get near line rates for them if not and your on a Chorus connection the problem lies somewhere between you and Chorus.

Chorus. It is Chorus. Telecom Wholesale doesn't exist anymore.

Maybe you are on a different line profile to them, that's something the ISP can change via Chorus tools/interface so they should have sorted it, if it was that.

Most likely there is just some extra attenuation on your cable somewhere along the way, that's straight up physics and bugger all you can really do about it.

They do exist, just in a different form. They resell GGI bandwidth, and resell the POTS that goes with Chorus DSL. (Plus other stuff).

The brand exists but the mast majority of what they did previously doesn't - much of it has been absorbed by Chorus. Very few people are left working for Wholesale compared to the old days.
