Spyware: UHF signal is not prone to rain fade. The phenomena generally affects frequencies greater than 8 GHz. So you need to tell us whether you actually have LoS (line of sight) to transmitter.

yes, i have line of sight to the baxters knob transmitter in wellington. i'm so close that when the installer came to put it in, he remarked that he could leave aerial lying on the ground and still get super strong signal.

i do have a splitter attached to the wall socket coming out though. one cable goes to my tv with freeviewHD built in, the other goes to my freeviewHD recorder. both signals are affected when the rain comes, although one not as bad as the other.

do you think that it could be a cable quality problem?

Who made the fly leads connected to the splitter?? You should use RG-6 with crimped F types and Belling Lee adapters at TV. If your reception is this sensitive however it maybe that the fault is in the connection at the antenna - if you even have any connection, also some baluns had a habit of filling with water. First try and see if you can pull the plugs off the ends of the fly leads.

Yeah if you have issues only when it rains then it would be sensible to check the connections are still clean and effective, and suitably protected from water ingress. I say clean because if water has entered then there is a good chance that the cable etc is now corroded.

Certainly sounds like faulty connection or water ingress. Must be on the antenna side of the splitter if it affects both units. Why don't you get rid of the splitter and run lead from wall to recorder and loop out to the TV as is usually shown in setup diagrams. That's what I do and I use f connectors at the wall plate.
