Foo: So, any news on Ice Cream Sandwich for the SGS II or am I being too lazy?

Yeah, nah. . . . .it's pretty much a guarantee, but as to when. . . . . .Last speculation I head was Q2 of 2012. . . .if that's a stable release date, you may see dev builds leaking early next year?

I guess I was thinking of the mod community rather than official channels. Any idea on CyanogenMod 9?

Hmmm. . .well the ICS source code was uploaded yesterday, so I guess development may start fairly soon. . . but, as with the current CM builds, it may be some time before they're actually usable.

I assume (unlike Apple) I can decline this update when it comes?

It does add a bunch of new features and proper hardware acceleration.

I'm looking forward to it, but definitely don't want to be too much on the bleeding edge.

Me too. . . but I just wish they hadn't made it blue. . . . sooooo over that colour for themes.

After what happened to my LG Optimus after it's "upgrade" to 2.3.3 I don't want another one on my SII. It does what I want it to do today and don't want that to break.

I saw a screenshot of a tweet from one of their dev team. It said "check back in 2 months", so chances are we're looking at a mid-Q1 release of CM9.

I'm trialling Arcsoft Mediaconverter 7 in the hope I can watch TV on the bus (content downloaded from my FreeView PVR to a PC for conversion). I chose h.264/AAC as this historically works on all my devices (Symbian ^3, iOS, WP7, OSX and Win7). Unlike a variety of converters I have tried this one so far gets the audio syncing right and plays fine on Win7 but when I tried on SII the video attempts to black bar into 4:3, while the content is actually 16:9, is this a converter or player issue? Note: SII player is the OOTB one.

I use "HTC Touch Hd Video Converter v1.21" its free, small and straight forward to use.

Settings -
Bitrate - HD input
Maximum Resolution - WVGA (800x480)

If you still experience issues with aspect ratio you can tick "crop to fit target aspect ratio" although I have not needed to use this yet and have successfully converted Inglorious Bastards BD, Iron man 2 DVD, Enter the Dragon and Ong Bak as it supports subtitle input.

Have you converted NZ FreeView content with this. I have tried a plethora of free converters and all have suffered video/audio sync issues, especially on 1080 content.

I've tried to set a conversion target as SDTV (576) to allow resonable playback on multiple devices without having to convert many times.

Additional question : I had a look about on the HTC site and when I searched for "Touch Hd Video Converter" it returned my phone (HTC Trophy), is this software included in the HTC or Zune software?

Can someone confirm for me that, if you’re flashing a custom kernel (i.e. Hardcore’s Speedmod) over a completely stock firmware/kernel, you can flash it directly via Odin?  Or do you have to flash the corresponding CF-Root kernel first for your stock firmware, and then flash the custom kernel?

I’m pretty sure you can just flash directly, but after reading up on it, I’m doubting myself. . . . .and it’s been so long since my SGS2 was stock, I can’t remember how I did it!! Wink

Just search "HTC Touch HD Video Converter 1.21" string in google and you are sure to find it.

In regards to freeview i would think your best bet is to convert freeview .ts content to .avi which you can find help for in the freeview boards here and then use that avi in the HTC converter to get an .mp4. Once you get the hang of it im sure you will figure out a way to convert straight to 800x480 mp4 from freeview.

I'm seeking a single step that works for HE-AAC, I've tried many of this multi-step methods and they have had varying results, I have no issue with buying software if it works, what I suspect is causing the issue is the "Smart Fit" option, I'll try converting again with this off tonight.

Of course, I'm still unsure if putting FreeView content on my mobile devices is even legal? So far I've only put DRM on them.
