For those with a Vodafone NZ sourced Galaxy S II, there is a firmware update available on Kies:

PDA:KG3 / PHONE:KE7 / CSC:KG1 (VNZ)

Oddly enough, it is still 2.3.3 (despite the leaked 2.3.4 firmware also being labelled KG3) but curiously has some 2.3.4-flavored features like video chat in google talk.

I didn't think to note down the kernel version before flashing CF-Root - lost root after flashing.

Android Version: 2.3.3
Baseband version: I9100XXkE7
Kernel version: 2.6.35.7-I9100XXKG3-CL401405 se.infra@sep-35 #2 (this is the CF-Root kernel)
Build number: GINGERBREAD.XWKG3

...as a footnote, have just realised there is no 2.3.3 KG3 CF-Root kernel available, but the 2.3.4 one seems to be working OK (gulp!)

nofam: Anyone tried/currently using Hardcore's K1-T8 kernel?? I'm plannning on flashing it tonight; it doesn't have CWM yet, but I can flash Ninphetamine back via Odin if it's not doing the job.

Needless to say Hardcore's pedigree with kernel dev'ing is impeccable.

13h, 10m on battery with quite a bit of txting last night, and still have 78%.? Android OS isn't even showing in the battery stats. . . . .?

And which rom?
Not sure what I'm doing wrong but i'm hardly getting 14hours battery with occasional bluetooth music, wifi and music.?

Pretty much what's in my sig still. . . . What ROM are you running?

If you haven't already, try the following:

- Buy Titanium Backup
- Freeze anything Kies-related (Kies Wifi etc), and freeze all the hubs
- Set wifi to sleep on screen off
- Disable fast dormancy

Cognition v1.15

Sweet just did these -
Freezed 2 kies related
Set wifi to sleep on screen off
Disabled fast dormancy

Will report back in next few mins/hours. I'm on 91% and 1h 12m atm.?

I'm on 4 hrs 1 min and 73 % left atm.

All I've done is few texts and checked email.. And handful of services.running in background like email, settings etc.

Ouch - can you post some screenshots of your battery use and running services?

Are you sure you set wi-fi to sleep on screen off? It's showing as on for most of your battery graph drilldown screenshot?

Try downloading watchdog task manager (lite) from the market and see if that throws up anything

nofam: yes absoloutely positive that wifi is set to sleep when screen turns off.

I'm looking at watchdog lite right now, not exactly sure what to look for.

I'll try freezing gmail app, whatsapp etc.

There is this Email service which when I go into it says SmsRelayService, i'm guessing that is pretty important?

Did going from cognition v1.15 to v1.30 make a bigg difference?

Try a battery calibration? I am yet to do it. Have you done one nofam?

Done calibration few times. Went right down to 1% then fully charged.

Did you do a backup with titanium on the stock rom and than reinstall everything again on the new rom?

Who thinks a FAQ for this forum (galaxy S II), perhaps posted to the front of the thread, is a good idea?

I see a lot of newbies asking the same questions, and even some old hands from other devices need info. People find wading through 90 pages (or 400 in the S1 thread!) impossible and i can't say I disagree. Often that info is out of date anyway.

If so, I'll volunteer to put it together with the help of the posters here....

Opinions?

I see a lot of newbies asking the same questions, and even some old hands from other devices need info. People find wading through 90 pages (or 400 in the S1 thread!) impossible and i can't say I disagree. Often that info is out of date anyway.

If so, I'll volunteer to put it together with the help of the posters here....

I absolutely agree - it will make life much, much easier for people new to the handset.

Perhaps have a link to the FAQ rather than including all the content in a post?

Questions/topics covered in the FAQ could include:

- Rooting your handset
- Flashing custom ROMs - which one to choose and how to do it
- Improving battery life
- "Must install" apps and perhaps separate into free and paid (I'm thinking keyboard apps, Titanium Backup etc)
- Phone monitoring tools e.g. CPU/Memory
- Why task killers are a no no
- Cases/accessories - recommendations
- Security recommendations i.e. installing Prey or other options
- Any uber awesome games that push the phone to the limits
- Any uber awesome apps that allow you to show off demonstrate phone capabilities to iPhone users

I can think of a bunch more and would be happy to contribute...I actually put together a list of good Android Apps which I email out to friends whenever someone new gets an Android device, haven't put it on the net though.

Just waiting for my SGS II to show, probably next week.

Would probably include a list of stock installed apps that can be safely frozen through Titanium, also include the minor things that people ask ie; the yellow warning triangle that appears, and the various ways of removing it, etc... I've gotten a lot of information out of this thread. It's been incredibly helpful.

hey if that question was for me, Nope i didn't do a titanium backup. All I did was flash kernel through odin and root by SuperOneClick, install CWM, booted into cwm and installed Cognition v1.15.

Is that okay? Or did I majorly screw up?

Was just curious, just incase you reinstalled all the old samsung/stock apps that cog removes which kills battery.
