Hey team, long time lurker, first time poster here. Not having any luck with official channels so thought I might be able to get some help/advice here.

In January this year I purchased this TV:

https://www.panasonic.com/nz/consumer/televisions/ultra-hd-tvs/th-75lx800z.html

Looks great! I installed Sky Sport Now on it, but unfortunately it is basically unwatchable due to the frame rate - have tried changing almost everything on the TV to no avail.

Backup plan enacted - got a Chromecast and it seemed to solve all problem as could cast from Phone/Browser to it and would play at perfect frame rate and no issues at all. Until.... approx 2 weeks ago. Was watching the Warriors game (casting from iPhone) and the stream started freezing multiple times (just for a second or two). This wasn't a standard 'buffering' pause (where the progress bar comes up) but literally the picture and sound just freeze.

Tried everything, right down to resetting everything to factory and it still hasn't fixed itself. I did notice there was SSN update two weeks ago, so wondering if it was related to that as seems to be fine playing on browser and phone - only when casting it is the issue. Watched the most recent Warriors game on Saturday night and managed to catch a video of it and send it through to Sky Sport support who have just said they will forward it on to their developers. The stream froze 35 times in the second half of the game alone.

Frustrated as - I reinstalled the app on the TV itself to see if that has been updated but unfortunately it is still unwatchable. Unsure what to do as obviously there is a LOT of sport coming up that is crucial viewing but at this rate it seems the only way around it might be to go back to the Sky Box and pay ridiculous prices again.

Any ideas? (Obviously preferred solution would be if it just worked fine on the TV app - but will happily settle for Chromecast solution again).

Thanks for you time!

I can only recommend an Apple TV 4K instead of the chromecast. SSN works fine on Apple TV.

I don't have a solution for you.

I have SSN connected to my TV on 3 devices;

  • a Chromecast Gen 3 on wifi.
  • a Chromecast with Google TV on wifi
  • a Mi Box with Google TV on Ethernet

The MiBox is slightly glitchy which I have always assumed due to the graphics processor not quite having enough capacity for whatever codec SSN uses, given a wired connection (but I am guessing). It was fine with Spark Sport and other sport streaming apps - but not SSN. I suspect this is the same symptom you experience.

Both Chromecasts are fine - no problem. Google TV has less faffing than needing to cast, but the older chromecast is fine.

I havn't noticed any degradation on SSN recently.

May be try to use Ethernet cable with your TV as a test and see if it is improved. Sounds like you have not a great connection with your wifi.

I thought this might be the case - and have Ethernet directly into the TV but still no luck.

SSN is the only app that has the issue, Netflix, Disney etc all play perfectly fine (direct from TV and from Phone via Chromecast)

Might have to reach out to Sky Sport Now support and get their "Select Panasonic Smart TVs" list.

https://www.welcome.skysportnow.co.nz/faq See the "What devices will the Sky Sport Now app work on?" question.

SkyGo no longer supports Chromecast builtin - I wonder is SSN is up next.

I would try static IP address for TV and change DNS to something world class google/cloudflare/dnsmasq, I prefer cloudflare.

^^Tried this this evening but didn't seem to help.

Side note though; (when watching through apps on TV) it only seems to affect SSN and TVNZ+ (or any live sport - although SSN highlights packages are the same too). Netflix/Disney etc all play perfectly fine frame rate, so I'm wondering if it's something to do with the TV itself - emailed SKY and they confirmed my TV should be compatible with the app.

SSN and TVNZ+ use a 50fps frame rate whereas Netflix/Disney I believe use 24fps, so less data is being sent down the cable from them.  May have something to do with the differences you see.

Purchased an Apple TV 4K, so will see how that goes this weekend but looked pretty good when I set it up this evening!
