I've bought a second hand DVS ventilation system and plan to install myself... my question is where is the best location in the home to install 2x vents? and position of vents in ceiling from wall etc? cheers

Heat transfer only works if you have a concentrated heat source like a fire place, where the intake is right next to the chimney. If the fire place has a pipe to the ceiling, then make a metal shield around the pipe and suck the air through that to get it super hot. You want the vents in the southern rooms to warm them up in Winter, don;t know about Summer.

If you have an aircon, then you rather want to suck air out of all the bedrooms and blow it into the living space where the aircon is (where it gets heated/cooled). This is exactly what I have done in our new-built home, although I'm just circulating air and not introducing fresh (or roof space) air like DVS does. I also do not know what effect this would have on the DVS controller.

But it depends a lot on your house layout, where drafts are, where North is, shade from trees.

You can never have enough Volvos!

Hi thank you for that but my unit is a DVS ventilation system (for getting rid of condensation etc) not the heat transfer type. do you know much on this ? cheers

I have one in the hallway near the living area and bedrooms, and one in the kitchen. That's just where they were when I got the house.

you want to find the 2 most central spaces, like a lounge/family room/kitchen area, and most likely a hallway near where the bedroom doors are.

You want to create the most air flow you can through rooms and out the gaps in the windows ie the little drains or any air leak there is. the principal is to draw in dryer air from the roof space and force out moist air from rest of the house.

dvs is not a heat transfer system

our main bedroom is off the lounge. hallway is short 2.5 meters (where manhole is) . spare room, toilet, kitchen off hallway

second bedroom and kitchen opposite ends to each other. toilet in between. hallway ceiling has enough room for light , manhole thats about it really. any advice on apropriate place on ceiling in any room to position vent? i.e away room windows, doors, so far from wall measurement? excuse me for asking much but wish to get it right keep mrs happy

Perhaps draw up some simple plans of your house including it's orientation vs North, will give the people here a better idea

Similar HRV ventilation systems take air from a high point in the roof space (where there should be warm dry air). This is fed to outlets that are usually fitted just inside the doorways of bedrooms. This location is selected because it minimises draughts created by the system being felt bythe folk in the rooms, which can be annoying / distracting especially at night when you're trying to get to sleep.
If you're using the system for heat transfer they don't recommend mounting the intake above a heatsource (like a fire place) as these tend to be drawing air downwards at this point to feed the combustion process.
This is what a family member was taught when they were working for HRV.

is the lounge to hallways door normally shut?

i would put one outside the main bedroom door in the lounge and one in the hallway outside the bathroom

you would need to leave the master bedroom door open to see the effects of it in the master bedroom at night

The original classic DVS system is ventilation only, where it pressurises the house. But they have expanded to include heat recovery and heat transfer and circulation. What did you get?

I'd probably put one in the lounge, near the bedroom door, and one in the kitchen. You could put one in the main bedroom but it'll be a colder room if you do that, since at night it's just pumping lots of cold air from the roof space in. That's why I only have my ventilation system working for 3-5 hours during the day, and I have double glazing on the windows to reduce condensation.
