Hello everyone,

I am currently building my dream home but I know nothing about building and building materials. My building company suggested me use the Corona Shake satin tiles, they said it has the same quality and durability as colour steel long run, but it can save me about $8000 compared with colour steels. Then I did some research on the website and found many people prefer colour steel. Can anyone tell me which one I should choose, colour steel long run or Corona Shake satin tiles? Any reasons? Thank you very much.

You need to ask why they would recommend a product over another. It can be false economy going for a cheap option. Also the big cost is usually labour.

From what they said it is due to the saving this option can get, looks like they try to save money for me. My budget is tight but I want to make a right decision to save money and time in the long term. But if the satin tile does the same jog as the colour steel then I may choose it. I just don't know if it is the case.

I would never ever ever ever ever get a roof with metal tiles again.

dent easily, cant screw into them without them flattening out, lots more noise with the wind and they look cheap.

$8,000 is a hell of a big difference for just different material. I think you're being had as to the cost difference - your builder probably just has a deal going with Gerrard - and wants to swing things their way.

Also it is more difficult to run pipes ect through steel tile roofs compared to longrun iron. Nightmare when it is a large diameter one like a woodburner flue. And agree fully with Richms about the other problems, especially the dents. As well as not looking good, dents can often cause them to leak. And the coating wears off the textured type which blocks up the gutters.

It is very hard to build the trust with companies. But it is also hard to know everything and get everything done by myself. This company has been recommended by a lot of people I know. So far our communication is good and efficient. If just compare this two products purely, what is your suggestion? Thank you.

My first thought was long run roofing cheaper than tiles because of reduced labour cost for installation. Then I realised there are some roof geometries where this may not be the case.

Note to others: The panels in this corona system are fairly large also, not single tiles like some older systems.

Ideally this would be a question for your architect. At that level they think about these things and have the experience to guide you with the different options and outcomes, costs.

But is this an all included architect/build/buy all in the same package for you?

One option forward is looking up the retail prices for these different types of roofing and see if you can see where the saving is coming from, ticket price or installation labour, or something different.

A big part of the choice is based on looks. Will your particular house design actually look good with long run steel or will it just look cheap? The tile panels do look very nice and really make some designs work with the eye imo. See if you can find some similar completed to look at before you decide. This could be a decision affecting resale value. So many house buying decisions are based on looks.

If you are lucky you might find a retired builder running the yard who can offer some experienced opinions. Look for the 60-ish looking dude with the biggest mo. Yeah, it's entirely heuristic but it might work ; ).

Ask why the big difference in price. I'd probably also prefer the corrugated iron look. Are they comparing apples with apples? Coloursteel comes in different grades and thicknesses. IIRC 0.4mm is standard, 0.55mm is much better - but higher price. Assuming it's a standard size house of about 200 m2, then $8000 is a $40 per m2 difference in material cost. For that difference, the tiles would probably have to be free.
