Can anyone please help me to rewire my phone socket, there is an existing white wire in port 2 which is for the extension, there are two loose wires one is white and I think this is the main phone line in and a light brown wire, I don't know where to put the two loose wires

White and brown are pair 2 incoming. Put either white or brown on the left, and the other one on the right termination.

If that doesn't work, remove them and try the Yellow and Black - although I suspect that the white and brown will do it.

Anything I say is the ramblings of an ill informed, opinionated so-and-so, and not representative of any of my past, present or future employers, and is also probably best disregarded.

So 1 of the wires in port 1 or 3 and the other wire in 4 or 6?

How many lines have you got? You only need 2 wires for single phone line (pins 3,4 for line 1) which is your white/blue (pin 4) and blue(/white) (pin 3) wires. They seem to be connected to pin 2,5 which should be line 2... What exactly is not working?

Edit: I see, you are trying to hook up extension through your socket? White/Brown coming from other room and WhiteBlue/Blue incoming (or the other way around)?

White blue is the extension these were already in place the other wires have come off when I removed the cover so don't not know where They came from

I believe toejam316 was correct. Connect white wire to pin 3 and brown to pin 4. If that doesn't work try to swap them around (since we don't know which one is transmit and which receive).

exactly this. that black cable is the 049.

Based on the wear on the white/brown pair it would definitely be your initial goto..

Use a punchdown tool, screwdriver can be ugly...

There isn't a transmit and receive as such.

" Changes to line polarity may occur as follows and customer equipment shall not be affected by such
changes:-
(a) Rearrangements within the network may result in reversal of the line polarity. Customer wiring also
does not necessarily maintain polarity.
(b) Line reversals can occur before during or after the application of ringing and at other times during a
call. "

Unless you have a PABX polarity shouldn't matter.

Associating pins with line numbers is a wrong idea. The original 3 wire jackpoints had each contact in the socket wired to a slot in the Krone strip 2,5 (the middle slots) were the pair used for the line. Later 2 wire jackpoints were simplified and the Krone strips had 123 commoned and 456 commoned and one line contact in the socket connected to each strip. The capacitor connects to the ringer contact in the socket.

The OP's socket looks like a 3 wire type so only 2,5 are available and if they've been spread by pushing wires in with a screwdriver you won't get a reliable connection. The wires should be punched in with the proper tool without stripping the insulation off first. Different gauges can't be used in the same slot.
