Hi all,

just a generic question, who has renovated recently and changed the windows for double glazing?

I am curious what sort of quote (price range) did you get per a window (material and labour included), thanks so much.

That's going to be how long is a piece of string type question I'd imagine based on the size of the window and what work is required to retrofit it.

It depends on location, windows size, window type. We retrofitted a window with Thermalframe (who are good but super super slow) and from memory it was on average $1200 to $1400 per window fitted for our fairly old house. That includes that some windows are actually multiple panes of glass. Most of the windows were put into the current frame, but one frame was replaced. Most windows were 2-3 meters wide and 2 meters high, give or take.

I'm doing one 1.6 x 1M single pane window install with Themalframe right now, into the current frame. The window is $560 inc GST, installation is $500 inc GST. If you do multiple window installs it doesn't cost that per window.

Very much this,

It will vary hugely based on House age and Window style

- if wooden hung sash or side opening??, -keep original frames or replace with alu or PVC, ?

If Aluminium it might be possible to keep the original frames, or if not then replace  with Alu or PVC..

Then you get down to the actual window count and actual glass meterage....

We did it on a 1910s Villa, and kept the original frames, but with new glass/weights and seals,  it was a huge difference, both from the thermal properties + also closing up huge sources of rattles/draughts around the old frames  - cost a healthy 6 figures...but was well worth it....

Barry from Fisher windows
He’s really good to deal with and was super helpful.

Just have to mention, that was only for Windows/doors
The install quote was around 7k but I had my own builder do it

Wish I got the thermal break but wasn’t sure I could fit it in the budget at the time (around $1200)

We used thermawood Otago to retrofit double glazing into 110 year old villa .

4 sets of bay windows each with typical 9 panes of glass then new front and back doors and glass surounds plus another 4 windows. Probably ?$25k over two summers

Good communication from foreman chap. Tried to match as much as possible old glass look round front door and protect a couple stained glass windows.

Thermally broken is worthwhile.

A good low-e glass like XCel or LightBridge can make a big difference to warmth. It's expensive but it more than halves the heat loss potential of the double glazing over plain glass.

I have a late 1970s Lockwood with aluminium joinery, about 110 sq m
I just accepted a quote to retrofit double glazing the whole house (except bathroom, toilet & laundry) for about $20k from Central Glass Whanganui https://www.centralglass.co.nz/

For another house some years ago, I did the same thing but only the living areas for about $15k
I used the Double Glazing Company https://doubleglaze.co.nz/ Wellington franchise

Thanks everyone!

I have a rough idea of what the renovation cost will be for my place now.

Hope all the double glazing windows are keeping you warm in these winter days:)

We renovated around 2 years ago and replaced all the windows to new double glazed windows instead of retrofit after getting quotes from Nustyle and Retrofit.

Total 24 windows or so and cost us 30k I believe, missus was working for a major glass company so we got a big discount on the glass, I also managed to sell all the old windows etc so it cost a lot less than it would have been (also changed all the colors in the process which is a bonus and not possible with retrofit obviously).

Would have been 30K before your discount (I hope) ?

How did they fix the rattles and draughts around the old frames?

We are looking at doing the same but have put it off because our front door has some gaps around it, and a few of the sash windows are rattley.

We didn't think it was worth spending the money on double glazing until we knew if the frames were ok.

@wellygary: I'm just checking that you really did mean six figures - like over $100,000?

I know retrofitting wooden sash windows is expensive (and I recall my brother only did some of his house due to the price), but I am shocked if it did cost over $100k!

Even so, good on you for retaining the architectural integrity of the house - nothing fuglier than an old villa with modern windows.)

Actually total 32 joineries and we paid about 35k altogether with installation. I manage to sell the old joineries for a couple of k.

It's just peace of mind rather than dealing with retrofit old stuff.
