I found my water heater is a small leak on one joint on its hot water outlet pipe. After a bit research online I believe it's thermostatic mixing valve (TMV) or called tempering valve. The exact leaking place is the adjustable part on it as I shown in the pictures. The water heater is still functioning apart from the small leak. I'm not sure if this can be repaired or have to replace the entire TMV. Where can I buy a new one if I want to try DIY? How much does it cost to get a plumber to fix it for their labour and the part? Thank you.

Legally a plumber is required to replace that. It's probably cheaper to replace it unless parts are available and cheap. As for labour cost I'm not sure. If that same valve is still available then it should be a quick job. Otherwise might just be a bit of work involved to modify the setup to fit new style valve.

Send those images to a plumber and see what they say. Or pop into a plumbing merchant and show them. That's bread and butter for them so they'll know best option.

We just had one replaced last week,

We were charge $263.49 for the valve and 1 1/2 hours labour ( there were a couple of other jobs )

I thought the price of the valve was a bit steep but if something goes wrong it is not my fault :-)

Thanks for your advice. Do you have some plumbing merchant names you can trust to recommend? I mean fair prices for quality jobs.

Not sure where you are located. But my main supplier (not a plumber but as a gasfitter) was Plumbing world. Guys at the trade desk deal with all sorts and get walk ins everyday. So if you have a local branch, could be worth a quick trip. As for plumber recommendations, i'm canterbury based, not sure on you.

Unless I've missed it you have not mentioned where you are located. People can't indicate a plumber without knowing where you are.
