Hi,
Can someone please help with this? I have got a Roku HDMI stick and it is not showing Netflix. I did a lot of research about it but cannot get it to load Netflix channel. As per the advises on web, there is a problem with US Roku and there are ways to work around it. My networking knowledge is limited so please excuse me for being a novice.
My understanding is this. Netflix channel on Roku somehow finds out that the device has NZ-based IP address and it refuses to load itself. This is my guess - I am not 100% sure. Probably - the Roku stick needs to pretend to be in US. Lot of people suggested ways to get Netflix channel think that it is in US region. These are suggested ways.
(1) Roku has hard coded Google DNS address. However I am not sure how this removes Netflix on it. Some people advised that we should block static routes for Google DNS addresses 8.8.8.8/8.8.4.4 on modem. I am not sure how I can do this on Vodafone SHG1500. Can it be done through parental control or access control section in modem settings?
(2) People have suggested to obtain US-based IP address (using private VPN or similar) using unblock-us, unotelly, etc. I am happy to do this but am not sure whether this will really work. But still I need to know how I can change primary and secondary DNS servers on SHG1500 modem. On some other thread - someone pointed that we need to login to modem settings using advanced/advanced credentials but when I login to http://192.168.1.1, it is not asking me user name and password. Can someone give me steps to achieve this? Or do I have to contact vodafone support to get the DNS servers changed?
Apart from these two steps, I am happy to try other easier ways to get Roku load Netflix channel. Now that we have Netflix in NZ, how have the things changed? I am not too keen on getting US Netflix if I can get Roku to load NZ Netflix. I saw some old posts about this but I would like to get a fresh perspective.
I also got reply from Vodafone support advising me against changing DNS severs on modem. This is the reply - "...changing DNS servers can cause other issues as well like traffic going the long way round and not using local CDN's..." https://community.vodafone.co.nz/t5/Personal-and-Business-Broadband/How-to-get-US-Roku-and-Netflix-working-on-Vodafone-SHG1500-modem/m-p/194536/highlight/false#M16854
Thank you,
Murtaza
