Awkward stuff but I'm wondering if anyone in Auckland has been circumsized as an adult? Partial Circumcision to be real specific. It's something I need to have done but it's hard to research where would be the best place to go to. I'm a little scared that a surgeon in the general hospital might not do the tidiest job, I don't need my ugly bits any getting uglier. Tempted to see a cosmetic surgeon but they'll most likely be significantly more expensive.

Appreciate any advice.

One of my sons required it for medical reasons at about age 11 - medical insurance covered it. Was done by plastic and reconstructive surgeon Murray Beagley who happens to be my brother in law. All worked out fine.

On the assumption that the OP did see "their" GP, but pretty obvious questions that are troubling the patient weren't addressed - leading them to need to post questions here, I'd suggest possibly seeing a different GP. I'm also making the assumption that the condition is phimosis.

Different doctors may have different attitudes, some possibly more prone to recommend to just get it over and done with (and that may be the best option and immediately obvious), others may take the approach of exhausting non-invasive treatment options if appropriate (which may be as simple as application of a prescribed topical steroid cream and possibly other topical treatments etc for a few weeks) before the knife, their own cultural attitudes might affect this, experience may affect this, and very importantly - what the patient wants should affect this.

IANA doctor. The OP may have tried non-surgical options and/or determined that they weren't going to work anyway.

There isn't anything wrong with general surgeons, but a cosmetic surgeon will be capable of more finesse and be able to do a much tidier job, with less risk of damage.

I'd have no hesitation in laying put the ping and going to see cosmetic surgeon. You only get one and you don't want it damaged.

I assume you have checked this out but if it's a medical need and you have health insurance it may be covered or partially covered, which would reduce your cost significantly.

Something else to keep in mind with the public system is there are multiple general surgeons. So the surgeon you meet, may not be the surgeon who does the procedure and he may supervise the incision rather than undertake it.

I had mine done at the age of 25 full circumcision (50 now) , I seen my GP and had it done through a private hospital. Back then I was covered under my medical insurance and the total bill was $1500 if I remember. Was a morning procedure and I was back out again about 5pm.

Cannot lie it was very painful for a good week and swollen to look like something out of a horror movie but swelling goes down and life moves on.

See your GP to get things underway don't be shy or scared to discuss any concerns after all they are health professionals.

Curious as to why only partial would it not be better to have a full one done ?? , just asking

I've had it done as an adult (when I was about 28ish) , I had it done in the UK so I cannot speak about getting it done here but I can give you recovery suggestions if you need them, pm me.

Thanks for the tips(!) guys. I basically have phimosis and excess foreskin which I tried to treat with the steroid creams awhile back after seeing my GP but didn't see any real improvement. And recently I slightly tore/strained the skin (I don't even know how), which has healed back but with some scar tissue making it even less elastic. I just want to get rid of the damn excess section of skin that's causing all the trouble and thought a partial job would work, best of both worlds.

I don't have insurance and doubtful this will fall under a medical need...my best bet is probably that it's difficult to clean now.

Can any of you comment on the amount of scarring it caused?

Best to see your GP and get things sorted.

I am only guessing but I could imagine the wait to have it done through the public system could be pretty lengthy.

Check out the cost of getting it done private, It may not be as costly is you think but at least you get it done and dusted.

I could imagine with the scaring there is going to be very little elasticity as you said and this is only going to cause you ongoing problems going forward.

Son had the same issue - phimosis. When he had it done it left no noticeable scar as it's concealed by natural skin creases, plus a (plastic) surgeon did it who considers the procedure a specialty so expected the best result. Son was a bit sore for a couple of days but nothing major.

It absolutely is a medical need and it should be covered under the public system anyway (ah - but waiting lists maybe). If you want to go that way, perhaps visit a public sexual health clinic. Yeah... I know... Don't worry about it - they deal with this every day - not just STDs etc. If you do need or want a private specialist referral - they'll sort you out.

Just wanted to clarify my post I was meaning the scaring you have now as opposed to after surgery.

I would agree though if you are going under the knife get the whole lot wacked off (no pun intended).
