Hey people, just wondering if any TV experts can gimme a bit of advice.
I currently have a Panasonic 1080p 40inch TV and I mainly use it for gaming and streaming content. For gaming I'm most often on xbox one X and ps4 for some exclusives. For streaming I'm either using netflix/twitch/YouTube etc on xbox1x or streaming from my surface Pro to the xbox using plex media server. I want to upgrade to a 4k HDR TV. Currently if I'm playing a casual story based sort of game I'll be back chilling on my bed while I play. If I'm playing a competitive shooter or something then I'm in my gaming chair and closer to the TV. The thing is I don't have much space in the room and the configuration at the mo means the TV is above and tilted down towards me a bit. Currently it's too hard to play fps games etc from the bed and perhaps a little too close to play from the gaming chair. I'll be getting a wall mount to move the TV further back and hopefully helping with this issue but it's the reason I'm unsure of whether to go for a 55 inch TV or just a 50 inch. 55 might be too wide for where I'm sitting. I have a surface Pro on my desk that outputs to two 24 inch side by side mounted monitors so I'm intending to wall mount the TV above them. So when I went to jb I was going to look at the tcl c6 55 inch that's on special for $999. The TV guy there talked me towards a Samsung 50 inch(ru7100) instead because of the higher refresh rate to handle the motion better. It was 300 bucks more but the difference was pretty noticeable so now I'm unsure about the tcl. I want nice looking 4k hdr gaming but I don't have a lot of money so this is about the extent of my price range. I have checked out some reviews of the Samsung but the viewing angles wasn't great and because of my weird space problem I'll have the tv tilted down and I'm just hoping this won't be too much of an issue(it should be pretty direct to where I'm sitting, I think :/)

So do you think the Samsung ru7100 50 inch would be the best idea? Are there any other 4k hdr TVs that you would recommend around this price point?

Open to all suggestions I really just want to make sure I don't overlook something crucial and make the wrong purchase. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

if your xbox and ps4 are 60fps then a tv with 100hz won't make any difference?? (do they even exist, true 100hz tv?)

i had a tcl tv and had no problems with the picture but i had issues with the lag of the user interface compared to samsung instant response.

samsung sound is better, the tcl i had, the sound was worse than my 15" laptop.

i won't say the samsung is definitely better than the tcl.

buy according to the size you need i think.

Well the tcl is only 50hz. Samsung is 100 HZ. The xbox will only be outputting at 60hz but the guy put on some rolling credits as a way to compare the quality of motion and the difference was huge. I wasn't able to test it with an actual console(they have buttload of TVs on display but all feeding off a 1080i input which is bizarre to me) but did get to try avengers endgame 4k bluray on the Samsung and it was pretty nice in bright scenes, but lighting in there is pretty bad for viewing TVs.

I'd steer clear of TCL - They might be nice panels, but the software and hardware driving them is lacking. I've got the X2 Quantum Dot panel and I regret buying it at this stage - weird bugs and not the most reliable, I'd rather a dumb TV. Go LG or Samsung, especially for gaming Samsung has the best panels.

I noticed that is for the 65inch and the same info doesn't seem to be available for the 55inch. is that because it would be the same or is it possible they used 50hz on the 55 to make it cheaper or something? I guess the guy was wrong about the 100HZ of the samsung but the difference was visibly huge between the tvs. The credits on the samsung were scrolling up smooth and were crisp where as on the tcl they were sort of ghosted and looked to be skipping up the screen. It instantly reminded me of my old uniden tv that maxed out at 1080i and put me off right away. Could that be due to something else ?

I'm looking online and now also wondering if importing a tv is worth it? Seems like you can get quite a step up in tv for a lower price but then I imagine shipping is ricky and customs may add on a fair bit? Would they even be ok for standards an power settings etc? Perhaps that is too much to consider...Has anyone done this?

If anything goes wrong with that TV, you're going to have a real good time shipping it back to where it came from for investigation - absolutely not worth the hassle. Also, whatever you save in face cost, you'll pay in customs duty - you'll be pinged for your GST and additional import fees (last time I looked it's usually $60 + 15% of total value incl. shipping?).

Given your implied knowledge level, I beg you to just buy a Samsung TV and get on with life - you'll go whacky investigating the nuance between devices and platforms, just know that Samsung is seemingly the defacto for Smart TV app support in NZ.

As for your budget and size concerns, 50" seems to be mostly on the out - 43" and then straight up to 55" seems to be the progression.

If you have size concerns, Harvey Norman has the 43" version of the Samsung you mentioned for $999.

TL;DR - TCL NO. Samsung YES. LG YES. Sony MAYBE. Just PLEASE not TCL.

Thanks for the advice. I think 43inch is too small as I'm currrently on a 40inch and sometimes it's really annoying to see things when playing back on the bed so I would like to have a jump up in size to change that a little. I'm thinking I'll go with the Samsung RU7100 50 inch. If the size doesn't work out I can always get a different mount for my monitors, put one above the other and have the tv next to them instead. I've spent tonight wading through tv after tv and the samsung seems to be the best choice for the price range in nz.

i guess whaT i'm trying to say is, AFAIK hardware - all TVs are 60Hz.

motion processing is software + pixel response time.

secondly not all TCL are automatically bad: need to see reviews by proper testers + quality control + is your TV using the same panel components as reviewer = too much to handle for some

Samsung definitely make 120hz TV's now, most of their higher end q series I believe are 4k 120hz. Also the TCL screens aren't 100% bad I agree, but they're not user friendly.

I, too been keen to upgrade to 4K HDR (50" or 55") ... but I don't really want an Android OS built-in - since I will be using nVidia Shield TV primarily anyway - I just need a good 4K HDR panel.

I had a look/thought of Phillips' TV too.

For PS4, Switch, nVidia Shield TV, maybe PC/Laptop gaming, still have PS3/PS2/Wii U as well that I may want to use as well.

Internet is my backyard...

I managed to click on the specs and it will show the panel specs of the 55", it says 60Hz but the panel is not made by Samsung like the 65" is. But TCL is almost certainly going to have multiple suppliers for their panels in many models so it may not be possible to know what you're going to get.
