I have a 42inch widescreen plazma tv with mysky and how do you get the full picture i have that HD as well and some programs dont show the full picture
working fine when i had the normal sky digital its only now that ive chnged to mysky that its not showing full screen on some programs.when i had just the sky digital i was able to change the settings in the sky box but cant seem to in the mysky
SETTINGS FOR MYSKY
in picture settings standard definition settings i have aspect ratio control is set to STB,
. TV Type is 16.9.
4.3 program display is full screen
an wide screen signalling is on
high definition settings is set to AUTO, FULL-SCREEN, ALL,
warnings HDCP SUCCESSFUL
on some channels it shows black bars on both sides showing program more like watching a 29inch tv
does anyone no how i can change it so it fits the whole screen. thanks in advance for any help

This is happening because those TV shows you are watching are in 4:3 and are not 16:9 widescreen.

All broadcasters here in NZ transmitting 16:9 transmit fulltime 16:9 and transmit 4:3 TV shows inside this 16:9 frame which gives you borders.

There isn't a fix as such because nothing is actually broken.

If you stretch the picture sideways you make everything fat (hence the term fatovision when people watch 4:3 TV shows in widescreen). Most people don't want to do that and instead prefer to watch TV shows in the true aspect ratio they are filmed in. Most new shows are now filmed in 16:9 however all old content isn't so this issue is something you basically just have to get used to.

The thing here is the broadcasters could provide the signalling (As Sky were) to switch your set top box/tv between 4:3 and 16:9 but choose not to. TVNZ and Canwest have never done this, instead choosing to broadcast 4:3 programming as 16:9 (That's why you see those black bars). Sky followed suit not too long down the track by following them, removing any signalling to have your set top box/tv switch between 4:3 and 16:9. Sad but true.

But don't fret.. as soon as those old TV programmes run out (ie: licence periods that the networks can show them during) then more and more 16:9 widescreen programming will come on. It's a transition period (a bit like Tape to CD and VHS to DVD and now DVD to Blueray) :)

true that sucks whats the use of having a 42inch widescreen tv when most of the time its showing like a 29inch.

I think you will be able to tell the MySky HDi that you have a 4:3 TV (output 4:3 pan/scan centre cut) and start stretching the image to buggery again - puke. My guess is that you had your last Sky decoder set on 4:3 pan/scan and didn't even know that a lot of channels were now 16:9 and pillarbox their 4:3 content.

what channels are you getting this? I haven't notice this (much) on our Philips LCD tv with TelstraClear Digital TV.

He's got a widescreen telly.. the problem is theres black bars on the left and right hand side.

I don't think theres any way to on-the-fly change the ratio on the MySky box.. you could change it to 16:9 Centrecut (from memory) and this would show the 4:3 stuff without the black bars.. but yes, the picture looks awful as you're effectively zooming in the picture
(just like that horrible digital zoom on still cameras) :)

im gthe last decoder i had has been put into the bedroom and i went into the settings on that and changed it to 4:3 centre cut and it worked fine on my widescreen i tryed to do that with mysky and it doesnt work its on channel one two three and some times on the movie channels ive tryed to change the settings but it makes no differance.

What you want to do is what the people designing TV's and STB's are trying to prevent you from doing - watching a picture in an incorrect aspect ratio.

This is the reason why all Freeview channels are broadcast in 16:9 fulltime and this is pretty much the accepted standard practice now for TV broadcasting.

Overseas where broadcasters have chosen to transmit both 16:9 and 4:3 broadcasting and set the flag on the show there have been huge problems with TV's that either ignore or have issues with the WSS flag which results in TV's incorrectly displaying content.

What NZ have done is straight forward and logical - I myself would far prefer anyday to watch 4:3 content with bars than watch it in fatovision and see everything stretched sideways to for the screen.

The problem if you set your STB for 4:3 centre cut is that everything is stretched to make it fat and you're missing out on 1/3 of the picture for all 16:9 content.

Yes. Any content that is 4:3 will have black bars on the side if you are viwewing it on a widescreen tv. It only only 16:9 widescreen content that will fill the screen.

Also keep in mind that at the moment a lot of the sky channels are still only broadcasting in 4:3. They are supposed to be switching over all of them to 16:9 but seem to be a bit behind schedule.

Once that is done you will see a lot less 4:3 stuff on your nice shiny new TV

Only old programs or ones on the channels that dont matter anyway.

Its the same as before any channels were widescreen, you either had the black bars or lost the top and bottom of the picture, or had everyone distorted so they looked american (read that as fat bastards) - there is no way to make a square picture fit an oblong screen.

Some channels are being broadcast in 4:3 but looking at picture should be 16:9. BBC News, fashion TV are two I noticed wrong broadcast format being used, i.e. bars top, bottom and sides of picture.

My TV has a picture auto format option that works through HDMI, I put it on this and it zooms the picture until bars are gone, if no bars on top and bottom picture then it still leaves bars on sides.

Realise zooming is lowering resolution (Sharpness) of picture but figure better then looking at smaller picture in centre of screen.

do you think you might be able to tell me where i might be able to find that on my tv its a sanyo plazma 42inch wide screen
