Hi everyone.

I am in Christchurch and have a lot of disabilities, so I spend a lot of time watching DVDs, my New Player is a Panasonic UB820,  some of my DVDs say they are region 2 and will not play, I am not sure how to unlock it but I was told I need some kind of remote?

I was hoping someone here might know exactly what I have to do.

Many thanks

Madeline

If you get it from harveys or noels ask if they have a dezone remote for it with their tech team.
Should have offered at time of sale I'd have thought. Though it is older now, so perhaps not new for them to care now?

But they all blast a bunch of code strings and poof. Out comes the tray and it's done.

Comes back to an old quirk that ruled us out from being locked around 2005. Can't recall the details.

Hi there, it says "the one for all remote" is that this? https://www.jbhifi.co.nz/products/one-for-all-contour-4-device-universal-remote?gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQjwwMqvBhCtARIsAIXsZpZWeTSqms2JGl1aNDQwKoUjodUCVDI-OaPwOsHHLrUJ6_GhJZnziIQaAtoSEALw_wcB I am not sure what this "magic" button is. Sorry, I am not very good at all of this.

No one was suggesting you need to buy another remote (unless yours is broken).

The suggestions are that the sellers or service people have a special 'service' remote that they can use to send a special string of commands to your DVD/Blu-ray player that turns off the DVD region checking function. That will then allow your DVD to play DVDs from anywhere without issue.

Probably best you make a few phone calls and see who can do it.

Service centre page here.

Don't try the Heatpump centres though 🙂

Thanks :) so much.

It will be a while before I will be able to find anyone kind enough to take me anywhere like that, sadly. I only really go places where I am funded to go!

I will definitely make a plan for it though! I just have to find someone willing to take me, make the call, and take it in. With or without me.

Everything is such a mission!!

I thought that person who linked that post above was saying I could do it here at home if I spent money on a new remote. Sorry if I misunderstood! I don't mind paying money if it can get it fixed from home, I wonder if any of those places would do house calls.

Sigh, none of them will be willing to do it here. It was worth a try. I think it will just have to be a long term planning thing for me :)

@Madeline .... where do you live?

Someone local might be able to petition a Panasonic service agent for you.

I live in Christchurch :) In Bryndwr/Papanui area.

I did phone some of the service centers this morning but the reception at them said they cannot help. Which is fine, I get it. Sometimes money can't solve a problem!

PS: I love your tardis picture :)

You should be able to get the special remote from ebay for $35 or so, not free, but should work something like this: https://www.ebay.com/itm/353967482599

I have one of those special remotes for the Panasonic DVD players.

I last used it about 8-9 years ago, it may work for you.

Its yours if you want to try it, just PM me your address and I can sent it to you.

The link I pasted above has all the model numbers it works for. I'm fairly sure nothing much has changed for 10 years or so.

Other option, might be if someone  has a flipperzero or similar

I've applied a community-based firmware release to my UB-820 that was sourced from here:

https://www.avforums.com/threads/lets-try-again-to-put-the-free-in-regionfreedom.2441584

The discussion is a bit all over the place as it includes learning / reverse engineering & testing etc.

The update requires a reasonable technical level to apply. Page 39 links to a VM & tips, and page 50 links to a patcher. Apply at your own risk etc.

It includes region free functionality for DVD and BR, noticeable performance improvements (stock firmware runs a core at 100% when idle), and other functionality.

If you just wanted region free DVD, the remote unlock option would be safer.
