I am trying to verify my mobile phone number for an outlook.com email account I recently created. I have an 027 number with Telecom. I keep requesting a SMS code be sent, but it never comes. I've tripled checked the ph number it's being sent to. I gather not all countries are supported for this, however NZ (+64) is in the drop down box to choose from, and it doesn't give me an error after I press send. It says it's been sent. I've been trying numerous times for several days. (Texts from google arrive within seconds by contrast).

So my question is does anyone know if Telecom NZ are NOT one of Microsoft's supported carriers? I've tried to source the answer on line but to no avail.

Has anyone reading with Telecom as their mobile provider successfully been able to get a SMS code sent from Microsoft? I don't normally have a problem receiving texts (that I know of).

I added a number to my Live account yesterday and received a SMS in less than a minute. My number is ported to Telecom and those are the ones usually causing problems.

Have you dropped the 0 from the prefix when entering the number?

Thanks for the reply. I selected NZ (+64) in the drop down selection and then entered my number in the space below (separate field) with the 0 included i.e. 027 etc. The message I get says a code has been sent to: "6427[insert rest of my number]". Even though I did put the 0 in the field, the message I get afterwards implies it was not included after the 64. It did not have a "+" in front of it though - just 6427etc.

Interesting that you got yours OK. I wonder what is going on. I've received other texts today and yesterday, so it's not my phone not getting them in general.

It shouldn't make a difference that it was added to a MS outlook account rather than a MS live account should it?

I'd try re listing your number without the 0 before 27

Just tried it now, didn't get the SMS this time but got it the first time around so perhaps the sms gateway is busted. The phone confirmation did work however.

Just drop the 0 and put in your number.

Hi - if you didn't get an SMS, what do you mean you got a confirmation of the phone number? Was the confirmation by email? I/ve been trying for the last three days at all different times of day/evening.

I shall try leaving the 0 out and will report back. Thanks.

So I deleted the phone number and re-added it. This time I got NO option to have a text sent, only an email to my recovery email address to confirm it was me who deleted it and the another email again to confirm it was me who added it (they both arrived immediately), so unfortunately I can't test if I can receive an SMS unless I get a captcha on sending an email again asking me if I want to verify a phone number. Selecting "yes" to this brings up the page to add your phone number again and request a code be sent. It would seem that just adding it to the "account information"page just sends and email rather than offers to send a text.

Next time I get a captcha with the link to verify my phone number I shall try doing so without the 0.

Grrr not much point having a mobile added if you can't receive texts if you're ever unfortunate enough to be hacked!

EDIT - just added something to my calendar in outlook.com for 9pm and selected the option to be reminded 15mins beforehand by email and sms in the options for my calendar. Email arrived but no SMS, so I guess leaving out the 0 didn't help. :/

Do any of you get calendar SMS reminders?

UPDATE

So I resurrected an old hotmail account and tried to get a verification code to my 027 phone on that too, and nothing. Decided while I was about it to try a Yahoo account to see how I got on with that - again no verification code. So I dug out an old 2degrees 022 phone that I never really use anymore, and bingo - verifications codes arrived in seconds from Yahoo, and Microsoft to both the hotmail and outlook.com accounts. Wondering if something was now fixed I tried to do the same with my 027 ph and you guessed it... nothing.

I want to ditch my 022 phone so I rang Telecom to escalate this problem, particularly when Maurice replied that he had had texts from Hotmail on a Telecom phone. Waited on hold for 17mins, explained the issue and was told I would be put through to a fault specialist. Immediately got cut off on transfer. Now I'm on hold for another 11mins an counting to try again to be put through..... argh will get there I HOPE!
