I am thinking to switch to Telecom NZ VDSL , but after I have talked with the sales person from Telecom ,

he would not recommend the vdsl at my resident area.

He saids, Telecom looks in to the distance of my place to location of the cabinet or exchange and results comes out at 10db which is so far off.

My currently ADSL speed is Down : 10 mb Up : 0.8mb ,
I thought changing to an VDSL at least would give me a bit of an upgrade on speed.

They say copper wire of the ADSL and VDSL is separate, so there is a chance of the speed would be slower than the ADSL.

I would need to pay $99 for the installation , and would need to monitor for a week , if the speed is not well , they would switch back to ADSL, still ending up paying that $99.

Recently my little brother started to play some online game (Diablo 3) but were complaining that the latency goes up above 400~1000 (Lag)

and even I noticed some live streaming site buffers alot than use to .

Any suggestion?

Hello... Our robot found some keywords in your post, so here is an automated reply with some important things to note regarding broadband speeds.

If you are posting regarding DSL speeds please check that

- you have reset your modem and router

- your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing

- you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap

- your tests are always done on an ethernet connection to the router - do not use wireless for testing

- you read this topic and follow the instructions there.

Make sure you provide information for other users to help you. If you have not already done it, please EDIT your post and add this now:

- Your ISP and plan

- Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)

- Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin)

- Your general location (or street)

- If you are rural or urban

- If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin

- If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service

- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

I suspect you are too far from the exchange, if you are with Telecom I can run a line test on your current phone number (PM me) and I can run a line test.

ADSL and VDSL go over the same cables.

10.8dB measured by chorus's gear is the limit for VDSL, so you are probably borderline at 10dB.

given your current sync speeds, theres a few situations at play.

1. Alot of crosstalk in your area, this would affect your VDSL performance negatively.

2. your internal wiring is in need of some work.

thats just to name the common factors.

ild also add, your main issue is probably the P2P system blizzard use by default in Diablo 3 as being your problem. likely your upstream is saturated.

if your keen on tempting fate, you could always give it a go, as part of your installation your internal wiring will get a touch up. and if its not looking good, you can always roll back to adsl.

it sounds like the telecom tech has smartly told you, you wont have the best vdsl experience, which is true. but they also did not say you cant give it a shot.

nope, your not borderline at all.

Line Attenuation (Down) [dB]: 21.0

limit for vdsl is about 10.8dB on chorus's tester tool, which lines up reasonably close on adsl2 syncs too.

21dB is a sizeable distance away, and thoes with equal stats usually dont fare too well.

yep, looking at thoses numbers there is fair argument to say your line would not be good on vdsl...
