I've recently migrated from ADSL2+ to VDSL and I'm not entirely satisfied with the rise in sync speeds. Previously on ADSL2+ my router was syncing at approximately 13 down and 1 up. With VDSL this has only marginally increased to 14.5 Down and 2.5 Up.
The cabinet I am linked to is 900m away from my house.

I do understand that there is a 10 day adjustment period, but I also understand that it is unlikely that the sync speed will change much.

The Chorus tech that came to my house measured the sync speed at the point of entry into the house and the speeds here matched those that I was getting on my router so I'm able to rule out poor wiring. Not only this, but we have cat5 all through our house given that we recently renovated. I've had a central splitter all along. The Chorus tech upgraded the line coming to the central splitter to cat5.

I guess my main question is - are these stats something that I have to live with or is there something that can be done? I was really hoping for better sync speeds. My connection stats are below. Today is day 2 after the install.

Hello... Our robot found some keywords in your post, so here is an automated reply with some important things to note regarding broadband speeds.

If you are posting regarding DSL speeds please check that

- you have reset your modem and router

- your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing

- you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap

- your tests are always done on an ethernet connection to the router - do not use wireless for testing

- you read this topic and follow the instructions there.

Make sure you provide information for other users to help you. If you have not already done it, please EDIT your post and add this now:

- Your ISP and plan

- Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)

- Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin)

- Your general location (or street)

- If you are rural or urban

- If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin

- If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service

- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

I recommend you read these two blog posts:

- Is your premises phone wiring impacting your broadband performance? (very technical)

- Are you receiving a substandard ULL ADSL2+ connection from your ISP?

"The cabinet I am linked to is 900m away from my house. "

This is exactly the result I would expect at that distance - the same thing happened to me, despite a textbook install with a master filter and a new dedicated Cat 6 cable and jack - so I reverted to ADSL.
My speed statistics before and after were exactly the same as yours.
VDSL is very sensitive to line length - and your line length may well be more than 900m.

Be good if we knew your attenuation. Best to ask ISP. Most likely a distance issue looking at those figures.

Your best option is to move closer to a cabinet, honestly. You're pretty borderline on distance.

13/1 sounds similar to my ADSL line. Your attenuation is probally around 20dB which is way too high for VDSL. I would go back to ADSL if it doesn't improve over the first 10 days unless you need the upload.

Yep, 900m is probably too far for VDSL to work well.

Assuming your master filter installation has been done correctly there is nothing wrong. You're simply too far away from the ISAM to get a decent speed.

Thanks for the responses. I guess I don't really have much choice. I'll try and get the attenuation on the line but I have a feeling it is indeed distance related. I'll probably end up switching back to ADSL2+. The minimal speed increase isn't worth the extra $$.

Any idea why my modem might be reporting line attenuation as 0 dB?

Using a Netgear DGND3700 v1 with richud custom firmware. I just switched to the Huawei router I got for free with the connection and these are the line stats:

I guess that clears it - the attenuation is far too high.

Further improvements on my line - day 4 now. Downstream rate has gone up from 14.4 to 15.2. It'll be interesting to see if it improves further.

What's really interesting is, when ADS2L+ newly came out - I recall getting sync speeds of 16 mbit for a few days. They then disappeared and were never to be seen again - my connection wouldn't ever sync more than 13 mbit on ADSL2+. I wonder if there is a cabinet limitation or line defect? Lately there has been a lot of noise on our phone line as well when speaking to people.

Corrosion + Cross Talk = lower sync. There isnt a fault really just what happens to copper over time.

You could log a voice fault for this and see if it consequently improves your VDSL.
