Since Tuesday I've been getting unusually high latency when connecting to Australian based servers in particular Sydney.
Speeds have been fine but instead of 20-40ms latency I've been experiencing 110-150ms across multiple services namely Discord, WoW, PoE which all use servers located in Sydney.
I've ran traceroutes to certain Sydney servers and I'm getting a few 100+ ms hops instead of the expected 20-40ms.
I'm assuming it's bad routing but not sure there's anything I can do from my end - tried contacting spark but they only did basic troubleshooting and checked the line speeds

list some of the IP's of the servers you are testing too so others so can see if its just isolated to you or not.

No doubt related to the SX cable fault in Sydney causing traffic to be rerouted.

on my VPN Server for work which are located in Melbourne, the latency is adding +100ms causing by Telstra Sever rerouting to offshore Server.

@hio77 is aware of it and he is following this up for me.

Spark troubleshot were quite useless as all they did was standard troubleshot with Chorus but the issue is coming from Telstra AU rerouting.

It is quite annoying because with my Spark 4G Hotspot, their routing is fine 75 ms but on my Fibre 100 I have got +175 ms which is causing a lots of lag at my end working from home.

Thank you I am not alone!

Yeah saw your thread, although I'm not using a VPN. Did your issues start happening around the same time as mine (Tuesday)?

hey with or without VPN I am also having high latency on Telstra Server in Australia. I haven't tested on more severs in Australia.

That might take a bit of time to resolve as routing is a complex thing but hopefully this will get solved the soonest. I really don't mind having 100-200 ms on Global website or other things but getting my latency right for my VPN Server is critcal for my work. For the rest (Video, Gaming, Website I don't really care).

I have had that issue since I have joined Spark Fibre 100 2 weeks ago I have picked up a lag on my work appz thinking it was an issue from my Work Network but actually it is Telstra and their routing...

you can try www.teslstra.com.au I have been having 165 ms on Spark Fibre 100

On Vodafone VDSL from Work, I am having 38 ms

I think as mentioned it would depend on the broadband IP you are assigned as that affects upstream connectivity (there is NTT, Telstra, Optus).

Routing is a difficult thing

the latency itself is on the return path, telstraglobal being the most notable right now, is routing via SJ.

once the fibre cut is sorted and things are back to routing normally latency should come right..

If you're really keen you could add or drop Static IP and see if that makes a difference to upstream routing. Not sure if that is still included in the monthly plan fee these days for business plans.

I thought that new TGA cable was suppose to improve trans-Tasman connectivity, but I don't think there's been any change to peering between the big players like Spark and Telstra as a result.

Interestingly if you compare those Vodafone traces to my one below you see that an excellent path to that game server is available on the Auckland-IX peering exchange. But of course, Vodafone and Spark refuse to use public peering exchanges. Vote with your feet people, move to an ISP that peers openly and you are a lot less likely to have this issue.
