Telecom's decision to not deploy an SMTP server on XT is an interesting one as it's something that is very common elsewhere. The issue and workarounds have been discussed numerous times on here but I've never seen a simple answer as to why all users can't automatically be given access to a Telecom SMTP server.

The problem with "using your ISP's one" is that many don't allow access to their SMTP servers from beyond their own networks, even if you are using authentication.

Oh yeah and is free for XT Data customers.

Nice consolation since i have a bill for $400 bucks with a few stuck emails that were sitting on my iphone out box! They i must have send in error one month, Did default to my gmail account!

Further to this and other comments!

Its not the norm having no SMTP transport agent of other ISP's, Considering they distribute the IP addresses on their mobile data network is seems at bit backward in regards to security (is this because of pay as your go data clients could spam email abuse annoymously?). We pay for the data, why not send it. My biggest shock is that their helpdesk and data team took 20 calls before I got sent to the Complex Technical Support, and Worse still they needed the their Subsidary Yahoo! Xtra & facilitate this basic service.

No wonder they have been having issues within the operation of their business. I have made a complaint to Telecom XT about it!

I hope other SME / Busines with out an Exchange Server find this useful and save alot of dead end calls and searching else where!

I'm still a bit lost as to why your buggest issue is with Telecom.

Your email service isn't with them, if it was you would have already had access to the Xtra SMTP server.

If you are using another providers email access and they presumably SMTP access from outside their network. This isn't Telecom's problem - it's your email providers. Many have realised that simply blocking SMTP traffic isn't the solution and that offering SSL access to their SMTP server is the best option both for internal and external email.

If you are using your own exchange server you can secure access to your SMTP gateway from outside your network, and ideally wouldn't be using POP/SMTP anyway for mail access.

its a nice courtesy to have an smtp server provided for you free of charge and whatnot, but i wouldnt call that the responsibility of the mobile company

I have a similar issue at the moment for a customer.
They are an xtra customer and have a t-stick but can't send emails as their software that they have to use doesn't support SSL!

Opinions are my own and not the views of my employer.

I can believe I am wasting my time replying to this! But since you're lost!

I'm still a bit lost as to why your buggest issue is with Telecom. Their Technical Support's knowledge base should be able to quickly provide a resolution for Data Customers for this senario! it Should take 20 calls to provide mail transport to data customers. and If they are paying iPhone Users to Jump from Vodafone they should see put falls in data useage and spikes! not simply increase your Dataplan to 4GB a month.

Your email service isn't with them, if it was you would have already had access to the Xtra SMTP server. Oh with My @xtra.co.nz address that looks profession doesn't! joe.blogs@acme.co.nz is what mose SME business need. Besides, if your ISP with Authentication allows SSL pass thru then appends that accounts verified email address or simply fails the message "Reply email address not valid. Thats why they authenticated my email address with the Yahoo! Xtra servers to allow it as a valid reply email address!

If you are using another providers email access and they presumably SMTP access from outside their network. This isn't Telecom's problem - it's your email providers. OK, How many Hosting companies  do you know that provide SMTP for Domain Hosting? Many have realised that simply blocking SMTP traffic isn't the solution and that offering SSL access to their SMTP server is the best option both for internal and external email.  yeah but see above! Not ideal

If you are using your own exchange server you can secure access to your SMTP gateway from outside your network, and ideally wouldn't be using POP/SMTP anyway for mail access. You must be a like Work for Telecom Support, your just as bad as they are. I was mearly suguesting for small business with out and Exchange Server that need pop/imap Mail configured on Devices using their own domain that it's is possible with XT afterall.

Haven you got some Palco / Axis PTZ alerts or people to help out in here, than defend Telecoms XT data support team!

Good For you! You and Biddle should get a job as damage control and too hard basket response team for Telecom. You'd be excellent! Ring 126 ask tell data team I was a complete muppet and was expecting too much! How dare I expect simple services they most other ISP and mobile data carrier offer!

See this sucks, You've got a T-Stick casue your want internet access, But you cant have simple mail relay.

Is it like some alert or notification system? You might be able to run like a simple MTA (daemon) running on localhost as a hidden service or something and route messages for your. you could like modift your "hosts"so you could use like smtp.whatever.co.nz ->  127.0.0.1

Hey good luck, try this, that looks to be what our after for.

Well, yes, the way you treated both sbiddle and pageweon should be enough for a banhammer aimed squarely at your user ID.

Read the FUG again. Just because someone disagrees with you it doesn't mean they work for the company you don't like/have problems with. Be nice to people because we don't let nasty people linger around here for long.

This service is free only for on account customers, not Prepaid.
And I would hazard a guess the Prepaid T-Stick spam scenario you describe is part of the reason they need this - it's just an added security feature, really.
