Telecom rang last night offering to extend my local calling area (Wellington) to include Wairarapa for FREE for 12 months.  Normally this would cost $5 per month.  Sounds great aye!  Ahhh, but there is no such thing as a free lunch!  In return for their gratitude I would need to commit to them for 12 months otherwise I would have to pay a $99 disconnection fee!  What a cheek, makes me think about looking elsewhere just for being so arrogant.

OMG they offered you something which you are completely free to reject. Those evil gits!

I went to Bond and Bond the other day and saw a TV I liked. but in return for giving me the TV the employee demanded I pay them close to $1000. How dare they be so arrogant!

Yes maybe sounds free but if the customer wants to move to a new phone carrier before the 12 months the $99 will have to be paid to Telecom...

it is a bit dody that they would charge you a $99 discon fee on a product with a $60 value.
You should have asked them what else they can offer you to stop you moving on. Wink

How dare they offer you something you might make use of for the grand sum of nothing on a monthly basis, but if you choose to take your business elsewhere will charge you a small sum to make up for the revenue lost by giving you a loyal customer (XD) a perk for remaining their customer...

Nope not missing the point at all...

The company gives the customer something for nothing, which could potentially (dependant on the customers usage patterns) cost the company far more than the early termination fee.

they can set the price of theproduct at whatever they like.

would you feel better if they charged $10 per month for the product ($120per year).

The thing is Telecom know what my annual spend is to the Wairarapa and I doubt whether it is much more than $30 so it's just a desperate bid to lock me in for little cost to them.  Good on them, but they obviously can't see the big picture - that it's perceived as a miserable con.  I wonder if they bother calling the people who spend big time to the Wairarapa?
I'm in sales and one of the proucts I sell is free on loan for 2 years provided the customer buys the consumables from me.  If they stop buying from me, or they are unhappy with the machine, I just take it back, no penality fee.  That way the customer is happy and I will get repeat business in other lines as they trust me to look after them.  You can't tell me it costs Telecom $99 to flick a switch to end the 'deal'. 
Either last year or the year before, Telecom introduced a penality fee if you were a little late in paying your bill.  The intelligent people at Genesis look at it a different way and give you a 10% discount for paying on time!

In the case of Genesis I would call it a genuine discount because I believe (stand to be corrected) sites such as Powerswitch do not take prompt payment discounts into account when doing comparisons, so they are competing with others on their base rate.
