Hey all,

Every time I've tried to connect using my VMC card it freezes after 5-10 mins. even though it says it's still connected. I've only been connected for over a month now and only use it in the weekends but this is just ridiculous as I've had to manually disconnect then reconnect every single time I've tried to connect to the internet. When I called vodafone they said it's probably due to Norton Internet Security so told me to uninstall it and download another programme. I did that but it still does the same thing. I'm getting rather frustrated and was wondering if anyone else is having the same problem.

Can anyone help me?

The Norton security excuse is a cop-out. I don't have any Norton software (or any anti-virus for that matter), but I still experience the connection freezing problem.

There was a discussion about this issue here recently, and it has been experienced by many 3G Broadband users, although I'm surprised that you're unable to maintain a connection for more than ten minutes. I find that on average I'm able to maintain a connection for at least a couple of hours before the connection freezes, although fixing the problem is usually a big drama which involves resetting the Vodem.

We have clients with the same problems, and now they have completly broken RCP over HTTPS which is used for Outlook Syncing to Exchange 2003 Servers.

Go Vodafone!

I wonder if VMC"s can be ported with portability? :-)

This would actually make sense - my push mail recently totally stopped working (Treo 750v syncing to Exchange 2003).  I can sync fine if I set ActiveSync to manually sync every 10 minutes but this isn't what I want...

Push mail works for a few minutes then seems to fall asleep until I nuke the 3G/GPRS connection and let it reconnect.

We've seen something similar in Australia. Using a built in 3G VMC card (IBM ThinkPad T60 and X60) in Brisbane CBD we couldn't get a connection. We spoke to Vodafone Australia and they said we needed to force the connection to only be GPRS. After changing the setting to GPRS everything worked fine. Interesting because Vodafone's coverage maps for Australia show full 3G access in the central city.

The problem is for a lot of people here in NZ, they are getting excellent (4 or 5 bars) signal levels but are still experiencing connection issues.

I had issues with it [the vodem] while in 3G mode and eventually switched over to a EVDO connection which doesn't suffer from the same problems. While switching to GPRS is an option - people have spent a bit of money buying/upgrading to a 3G device and to not be able to use the 3G service reliably is a problem.

Hey all,

Thanks for all the replies. It's good to see that I'm not the only one having issues with VMC. Sorry for not replying earlier but I just wanted to thank you all for your comments. Every time I tried to get through to customer support I always got put on hold so it's good to be able to get answers in forums such as this.

Just an update, I still have the same problem and in fact it just got worse, then I tried using the GPRS profile instead but then I got an error message saying there's something wrong with the port. Hell, I'm just not getting any luck with Vodafone. I'm too impatient to try and figure it all out so I've decided life's too short to let this bother me so I'm just going to cancel my plan.

Thanks again for all your comments.

Interestingly, I have recently found that the connection freezing problem has improved. In fact, I don't think it's happened to me for at least a couple of weeks.

Unfortunately other reliability issues have persisted, but I'm going to stick it out until I'm a year into the contract and then I'll reassess the situation.

Has anyone tryed connecting directly through Network Connections rather than using the VMC software ?

I've been connecting this way for a while and find the locking effect hasn't been as bad.

I wonder if it occurs when no data is being sent, anyone tried running a ping -t www.vodafone.co.nz in the background to see if it still occurs?

I've found running a ping in the background stops the connection from freezing - but it also chews up traffic, and stops the connection from idling out - leading to possible excess usage charges if you forget about it.

I also have noticed the connection becoming more reliable. I force my connection to a 3G only profile and use a IBM ThinkPad with a Huwuari (Spelling??? - Can't take it out to see how to spell it, I'm using it now!)

Been surfing all morning fine on it even without the ping now.

Nasty - constant pinging is not good for the radio resource. From Vodas perspective it is not about how much data you use doing this it is about how often the radio is active.

You are right though, keeping it active will probably stop the freezing issue which sounds like a problem with dormancy reactivation. Device thinks PPP is still there but the network has another idea.

BTW - it is Huawei

How are end users finding the freezing issue now??

Fingers crossed this has stopped now and over all performance has improved

Thanks John

Mine has been significantly better - however yesterday I was having problems on the cells around Remuera and Parnell with data sessions refusing to do anything.  I could connect but not transfer any data... made sure it wasn't a DNS problem.

Other than that today has been fine.
