Hi Folks,

My VF VDSL IP address changes rather more regularly than I think is reasonable. I'm having a long running discussion with them about this, but it isn't going anywhere fast.

I'm not looking for a static IP, but one that doesn't change daily would be nice.

Are others experiencing anything similar?

are you rebooting your modem alot?


is your dsl loosing sync?


how was your vdsl installation? Master filter installed with dedicated dsl jackpoint?


Worth pointing out, i have noticed the Vodafone PPP dropping on the  adsl connection here, but that is generally late night, and hasn't happened for a few days.



a Decent VDSL line should just stay stable, Mine averaged 3 month+ Sessions.

Sounds like you are losing sync (DLM or otherwise) for sure, it's the only time our modem changes IP.

If you don't pay for a static IP then they can give you a new IP whenever they like, it also depends on the IP address lease time.

If it really concerns you then get a static IP otherwise just leave it be or use a Dynamic DNS service. The IP address changing won't bother 99% of their residential customers at all and for those who it does bother I'd safely assume they've got either Dynamic DNS or a static IP in place.

I'm not sure how to know if dsl is losing sync.,  but the connection time reported by my HUAWEI HG659 router matches my last IP change.

Here is some information which will likely help resolve your concern. A new dynamic IP with a VF xDSL product only gets applied with a authentication drop. A sync drop will also mean an authentication drop too. To solve your problem forget about the fact the IP is changing when talking to the call center it would probably just confuse most agents. Conversely talk to them about either your sync or authentication dropping regularly and you are bound to get assistance with that. Fix that problem and since it is the root cause you will get your desire outcome of an IP address which does not change regularly.

To give you an anecdotal example my authentication on my VF VDSL dropped last on the 21st of September. I have had the same IP since then.





Please note: I have a professional bias towards Vodafone.

Also, I don't know anything about these modems, but some modems have settings where the connection times out after X amount of idle time. Is it possible this may be configured?

The best I have is a message showing the "Internet uptime" that matches the last disconnect (ie: last night, in the middle of a TV show on Netflix), while "System Uptime" is measured in days (ie: the modem isn't randomly rebooting/being power cycled)

The system logs are currently at the wrong log level, and so are filled with "notice" level messages that only go back a few minutes. I've adjusted the logging level now. Hopefully that will help.

The Vodafone staff swear that 2-3 disconnections per day is completely normal, and won't have any affect on my internet usage. Clearly they don't watch video, or play online games (ie: do the kinds of things VDSL is supposedly good at). They also seem to think I may have a LOT of power cuts :-)

The IP doesn't change unless there is a session drop. Anything under 10 drops is considered within spec for a DSL line according to Chorus. Get Voda staff to run an analyser to track DSL drops. If the analyser can't confirm DSL drops, then you must be getting PPP drops - which is usually caused by the modem.

Do you have a monitored alarm or an alarm that was monitored at some point? It's always possible the master filter wasn't installed correctly.

i find it common that many isps front line support dont understand how disconnections affect DLM.

Internet has been "a bit rubbish" today, according to people home during the day. Certainly my hourly IP test agrees. Didn't have a connection at all at noon!

They are seeing drops at their end, and it's under 10 per day, so I guess this really is entirely normal and acceptable? Really?
