I'm trying to narrow down the cause of the problem which is when I watch video streams from twitch.tv, they frequently pause.  My speedtest result is currently 100Mbps,+, but video streams with  bitrates as low as 1.3Mbps pause all the time.  It's very frustrating.  Nobody else in the stream's chat has that issue or has mentioned anything about it.  First I want to know if the fault lies with Vodafone because I have a Vodafone UFB account.  Do any of you with a different ISP get the same result from twitch.tv?

(edit)

OK, when I did a tracert yesterday I thought the IP addresses with 202 were within NZ.  Nope, my twitch.tv traffic is being routed through Hong Kong.  Is this the same for you guys?

Hello... Our robot found some keywords in your post, so here is an automated reply with some important things to note regarding broadband speeds.

If you are posting regarding DSL speeds please check that

- you have reset your modem and router

- your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing

- you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap

- your tests are always done on an ethernet connection to the router - do not use wireless for testing

- you read this topic and follow the instructions there.

Make sure you provide information for other users to help you. If you have not already done it, please EDIT your post and add this now:

- Your ISP and plan

- Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)

- Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin)

- Your general location (or street)

- If you are rural or urban

- If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin

- If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service

- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

I recommend you read these two blog posts:

- Is your premises phone wiring impacting your broadband performance? (very technical)

- Are you receiving a substandard ULL ADSL2+ connection from your ISP?

I used to have this same problem when I was on Orcon VDSL, but I've since moved to BigPipe UFB and I regularly watch 4+ twitch streams on Source quality at the same time with no issues. Doesn't matter what time of day. I've managed to watch 8 streams on source at peak time before flash killed my CPU.

I'm currently on holiday in Aussie and the cell signal isn't good enough to remote into my PC for a trace route, sorry.

Rappelle: Used to be on Slingshot ADSL 12/1, and I couldn't stand to watch twitch even on its lowest settings because it'd pause all the time - even though I could easily watch 1080p on youtube. Now on Slingshot 100/20, seems to be better - can watch Source most of the time, but still occasionally pauses. Have to admit, it's freaking annoying.

I'm in that position right now with Vodafone UFB 100/10!   Bitrates from Youtube are great but twitch.tv bitrates are shockingly slow.

Look where "tek" is at. He can watch multiple twitch.tv streamers broadcasting at source bitrates on BigPipe UFB without interruptions while I, with Vodafone UFB, can't even get pause free video from *ONE* piddly 1.3Mbps stream.

I used to be on snap, VDSL 60/10.

Ild watch multiple streams source quality in twitch no buffering.

4K youtube would fly.

now that i have moved and on Vodafone ADSL 14/1 i dont exactly have as much bandwidth to play with, But i do get buffering a fair bit even when the connection is not inuse by others.

Later at night i can watch multiple source streams (where the source stream is a 3~4mbit broadcast) without issue.

i have no issues with "4K" (youtube sees 2160P as 4K) After the Initial build up buffering stage when using http2(h2-14) If i disable such features it will manage just fine (i have no played too much with this yet, so dont take it as clear reasoning though) - so more of a issue on my side imo currently.

Dropping down to 1440P buffer free.

There was a period between moving where i was without a reasonable connection, so there is no telling for me if it relates back to a change twitch has made or indeed something on vodafones side, More testing would be required before i can call freely call that at all.

Only time I ever had buffering problems was when I switched to the 200Mbps plan on Snap!. Quite a few people on here had the same problem that was on that plan and using any 7300 series fritzbox. During the time, I used TardsPlaya to watch streams. You can get this at www.tards.net . Free

informations a little limited, but seems more of a preference thing compared to using livestreamer.

I've certainly noticed an improvement, not perfect but certainly a bit better. - there is a buffer point while the window scales settle in but after that things are solid. (testing with twitch itself rather than running through livestreamer)

Will see how things go around 5~6 when the larger matches are up.

If you change the window to another monitor it will reload the video. It's an option in the Media Player Classic. You can disable if you want. You can also go in the settings and direct it to use another media player, like VLC or Windows media player.

i was talking about tcp window scaling, not what it does to monitors.

That would be an annoying feature too.

It's an improvement.  For the moment I can watch ~2.8Mbps streams or lower without them pausing.  I'd love to be able to watch 5-6Mbps streams once more.  The video is just so sharp that it almost looks as good as having the images generated by a local videocard.

Was occupied today, so didnt get to test on a decent stream.
