Hello
Since I'm going to work from home moving forward it was time to upgrade from ADSL 2+ with Slingshot to VDSL. Been happy with Voda at the office and bach, so thought I'd move to them for VDSL at home.

Sign up process and communications were excellent.

Friendly Chorus tech arrived and did the install. Ran a separate line to the VDSL modem to make sure it had no internal wiring issues. Upon completion he was very apologetic about the speed. He was getting 14Mbps down and 2.5Mbps up. Not the end of the world I said, better than the 9Mbps down and 1.5Mbps up I had on same line with Slingshot ADLS2+.

However... he said he'd check back at the exchange to make sure there weren't any noise issues on the line (or something like that). Saw him the next day and said he checked and all seemed fine.

Despite being less than I expected, I thought I'd survive. But since connecting the mode 6 days ago, the best I've had has been 13Mbps down, and 0.6Mbps up. I can deal with the down, its better than before, but the up is less than half what I had on ADSL2+ on the same line.

Is this normal? I thought given the good (ish) speeds I had on ADSL 2+ I probably had an OK line and could expect even better on VDSL. Or is this over simplifying things?

My biggest beef is the halving of the upload speeds. Hard to work remotely on 0.6Mbps...

I'd appreciate any thoughts/ideas... its obviously waaaay less than the 15-70/5-10Mbps Voda quotes on their site.

Should I go back to ADSL2+ ? Could it be due to Voda equipment at the exchance? Would I possibly be better off on another telco?

Thanks in advance for your help!

I'm attaching the figures quoted by my router in case it sheds more light on the subject...

Upstream line rate (kbit/s): 487

Downstream line rate (kbit/s): 14075

Maximum upstream rate (kbit/s): 438

Maximum downstream rate (kbit/s): 13772

Upstream noise safety coefficient (dB): 12.2

Downstream noise safety coefficient (dB): 11.8

Upstream interleave depth: 0

Downstream interleave depth: 0

Line standard: VDSL

Upstream line attenuation (dB): 0

Downstream line attenuation (dB): 0

Upstream output power (dBmV): 3.4

Downstream output power (dBmV): 18.6

Downstream interleave depth: None

Hello... Our robot found some keywords in your post, so here is an automated reply with some important things to note regarding broadband speeds.

If you are posting regarding DSL speeds please check that

- you have reset your modem and router

- your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing

- you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap

- your tests are always done on an ethernet connection to the router - do not use wireless for testing

- you read this topic and follow the instructions there.

Make sure you provide information for other users to help you. If you have not already done it, please EDIT your post and add this now:

- Your ISP and plan

- Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)

- Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin)

- Your general location (or street)

- If you are rural or urban

- If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin

- If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service

- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

I recommend you read these two blog posts:

- Is your premises phone wiring impacting your broadband performance? (very technical)

- Are you receiving a substandard ULL ADSL2+ connection from your ISP?

telco doesnt make a difference on VDSL

sounds like you are at the limit of VDSL and there wont be much you can do to get a better connection, but your upload does seem a little slow.

The same thing happened to me (with Orcon), despite a new master filter and dedicated wiring.

The minimum speed normally considered acceptable for VDSL is 15Mbps down and 5Mbps up.

Your connection fails on both counts.

Go back to ADSL - your ISP should let you do this without penalty, and ADSL should be slightly cheaper.

Copper run not suited for VDSL, Request a move back to ADSL2+

As more users connect up to VDSL the speed will drop further due to Crosstalk

Thanks for the feedback - unfortunately fibre not coming until after 2017. Stink.

Some more info -- our landline phone on the same number is also having trouble... inbound calls only ring once or twice and then the call gets dropped and caller gets a busy tone.

I understand that this is often caused by water on the line or a short of some sort. Never had the problem prior to the VDSL being fitted last week, so makes me wonder is the two (slow VDSL and line cutting out after one ring) are related...

What do you guys recommend I do? Is there a specialist team at Voda I can contact about this?

Call and report your issue with your phoneline, Dont try to reference it to your dsl in terms of speed or anything.

Mentioning that the fault only occurred when your VDSL was installed would be good however.

My wifes grandmother had this, 1 ring and it would hang up, called spark in her case and within the day someone had come out and sorted it for her. she doesnt have DSL but if you mention its the phone line it generally gets things done faster

can't be called, one ring only is the jargon for that one. or CBC ORO for the lazy.

But agree with hio77, do an isolation test for the phone issue, then call in and get a fault lodged for that only, and mention that it's happened since the splitter was installed. Expect they will need someone to be home when it's fixed.

Thanks for the term Dylan.

Just to  be sure its not an internal wiring issue, I have disconnected the internal network from the master splitter/filter where it enters the house. So there is no internal network connected on the house side of the splitter, only the modem line.

Am I right in thinking that if I dial the number, even though no phones or jackpoints are connected to the the line, that the number should ring anyway? I have tried calling the number and same thing, it rings once and then call gets dropped. This isn't because I disconnected the internal network is it?

Thanks for your help. Wanted to eliminate all possible problems my side as my non-technical wife might be the only one home when the tech visits...

I'm not too sure sorry, but it does sound like you've gone above and beyond in the troubleshooting and it's probably time to get a fault lodged. The wait time is currently around 15 minutes for the fixed line tech support teams.

I'm on Fibre and my phoneline runs through POTS on ONT. From the day I ported my number from ADSL, I had the same issue on phoneline you mentioned. Interestingly, once you make an outgoing call, the incoming calls comes through fine for sometime. That was the temp workaround I used.
I raised it yesterday and ISP said they fixed it. I'm not sure what the issue was.

Asquith Ave end of Burch St in Mt Albert. ]

Quite sure there is a problem with the line, guessing its at the exchange end, as this would have been altered when changing for ADSL2+ to VDSL? No problems with inbound calls dropping out prior to the switch and have removed all internal wiring, putting only the phone immediately after the master splitter, still have the problem. Internet, as well as being v slow, seems to spasmodically drop out for 30s and come back (modem shows it as still connected though.)

I have logged the fault with Voda, who have logged with Chorus. Hopefully the phone and internet issues are related and fixing the phone improves my VDSL. Fingers crossed!
