Hi,

I would like to check whether I am getting optimum download speed on my Vodafone ADSL broadband connection.  It is in mount eden area.  Right now I am getting about ~3.5 Mbps when I test speed in https://www.speedtest.net/

As per this report, Vodafone claims their average download speed is 10.88 Mbps.
Vodafone speed performance report

As part of some other links on Vodafone website, they say their equipment is capable of delivering 24 Mbps speeds on ADSL2+ lines.

Thus I am wondering why I am getting mediocre ~3 Mbps speeds.  I know there are lot of factors that could be responsible for the speed and it is a broad topic.  Factors like router type, WiFi or cabled connection, area, proximity to exchange, etc. do affect the speed.  But I would like to know what average speeds other people are getting in Mt Eden or nearby areas.  What steps can I take to improve the speed?

I am having Netgear DG834Gv3 ADSL modem.

Thank you.
Murtaza

Hello... Our robot found some keywords in your post, so here is an automated reply with some important things to note regarding broadband speeds.

If you are posting regarding DSL speeds please check that

- you have reset your modem and router

- your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing

- you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap

- your tests are always done on an ethernet connection to the router - do not use wireless for testing

- you read this topic and follow the instructions there.

Make sure you provide information for other users to help you. If you have not already done it, please EDIT your post and add this now:

- Your ISP and plan

- Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)

- Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin)

- Your general location (or street)

- If you are rural or urban

- If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin

- If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service

- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

I recommend you read these two blog posts:

- Is your premises phone wiring impacting your broadband performance? (very technical)

- Are you receiving a substandard ULL ADSL2+ connection from your ISP?

Have a good read of the automated response post above from PeterReader.

ADSL is really a 'best effort'. Speeds will essentially be the same on ADSL regardless of your ISP as they all use the same infrastructure. If you're in Mount Eden you'll likely have access to either VDSL or Fibre which would give a much higher speed than this. If ADSL is your only choice get a master filter installed if you haven't already because that's basically all you can do to get the highest speed possible (especially if you're in an older home or have shoddy wiring).

Also, you're better off using the sync speeds from the router's web interface to measure your speed as opposed to using Speedtest.net

@mtinwala Quite a bit of Mt Eden is served off the Mt Eden exchange and has not been Cabinetised, So you need to check out the modem SYNC stats and make sure you have good house wiring setup for xDSL

Hi Murtaza

Yeah, looks like your connection could maybe go a bit faster. Please try unplugging everything from your phone sockets, so all phones, answering phone, fax machine, phone extension cables, phone double plugs, unplug all of that. Then plug your modem directly in to the phone socket, and see if it goes faster. If it does go faster then plug in just what you need and make sure it's on a good adsl filter, a couple of adsl filters should have come with your modem, but they may have potentially developed a fault.

It looks like UFB and VDSL aren't options for you, but a first glance shows your ADSL should be about 10Mb/s depending on a bunch of factors.

Cheers

Dylan

Mt Eden is a terrible place for broadband. Very little cabinetisation occurred due to the ground conditions.

Without knowing a lot more about your exact location it's not possible comment - but there are areas that are sub 10Mbps. You just need to ensure your internal wiring is fully up to spec and ideally have a master filter installed to ensure you can get the best speed.

If you are fed off the exchange you will be on Vodafones own gear AKA Red network.
They run a lower SNR than wholesale gear and you will usually see better speeds on that.
Otherwise take into account what Steve said too.

Did an isolation test.  Removed all devices, phones from all jacks.  Connected modem directly to jack without ADSL filter.  No improvement.

Used the newer Vodafone modem (Huawei SGH1500) but it has the same speed.

Both modems show download rate ~3.5 Mbps in router status page in modem settings.  So this data comes from router settings only - not speedtest.

Older Netgear DG834Gv3 shows network type 801.11g and vodafone one shows 801.11n.  I am not sure it is worth upgrading to latest router if problem lies somewhere-else.

Thanks guys for your replies.  Appreciate it.  I am doing my own research on it and I know my queries are naive but just cannot resist temptation of getting quick answers.  I think I may have to go master filter path.

Despite the fact ISPs recommend an isolation test it won't necessarily make any difference in many situations where your internal cabling is the root cause of the issue.

It's not possible for anybody on here to remotely diagnose a fault - it could well be that you're in a poor part of Mt Eden, or it could be that your internal wiring is severely impacting your connection. As you own the wiring inside your home it's not the responsibility of Chorus or your ISP to make changes to it.

I had a customer ages ago with a pet rabbit that would hop around the house eating the outside of phone extension cables. Isolation tests are good because you never know entirely what's happening or what could have developed a fault.

What does the chorus website actually say you can get?

https://www.chorus.co.nz/network-map

I'm also in Mt Eden and spent a couple of years connected to the exchange with terrible speeds because I was accidentally not connected to the cabinet after cabinetisation was completed.

This was quite a while ago, so I'm not sure how common it is any more, but perhaps a possibility if you've had the same plan\connection for a long time?

It was only after I found Mr Biddle's blog on the subject and pushed the Vodafone helpdesk with references to the chorus website and what it said I should be getting that they discovered the mistake.

Network capability

  • Broadband > 10 Mbps
Network upgrade scheduled

  • UFB fibre up to 200 Mbps by Jun-2018

That is what the Chorus website says for my address.  Thanks @sidefx.  You have presented a completely different aspect to this problem.  My plan/connection is about two years old.  House is about 20/30 years old.  Everyone here seems to be blaming my house wiring (master filter thing) for low speed so I am afraid to ask Vodafone help-desk for anything.  I am a tenant in this house and may not want to spend 200 bucks to get the master filter installed if other options are available.  Have to get my landlord permission to do that also.

@sidefx, although this seems a far-fetched idea, I would be interested how Vodafone fixed your case and discovered the mistake.  What was the problem at Vodafone's end?

I can confirm it's not a cabinet getting in the way. If it were there would be an easy solution of just moving you to the cabinet. :)

Please send me a private message with your address and email address and I'll email you a screenshot with more details.
