Hi,

I am in need of your help to solve a problem.

I have a new Vodafone Huawei HG659.

My landlord has Orcon Broadband line and she has given a Network port in our unit/apartment. I connected HG659 with that network port and all my devices can successfully connect to HG659. The problem is, none of my devices can access the internet.

When I connect laptop directly to the port through network cable; it works perfectly fine. It obviously shows that internet is available at the port but the router wouldn't let it through.

I have tried to reset to the router and done all sort of things and read many posts here but couldn't fix the issue. Is the HG659 locked with vodafone network or there is some other issue.

I shall appreciate your expert advice to fix the issue. Please be patient to explain coz I am not an IT or network expert.

What WAN settings do you have in the HG659?

HG659 is not locked. You probably haven't set it up properly.

You have to set the router up to work with the network connection you've been supplied with.

Here's a basic outline of what you'll need to do, (I can't be too specific as I'm not familiar with the router!)

1 - Reboot both the PC and the router.

2 - Connect the PC network port to one of the 'LAN' ports on the router.

3 - Login to the router web management page. Open a browser and enter 192.168.1.1 Username/password will be vodafone/vodafone or user/user or admin/admin (or similar)

4 - Find the 'Internet Setup' or 'WAN Setup' (or similar) You want to set this to 'Ethernet' as the connection and 'Automatic - DHCP' for the configuration. Save these settings.

5 - Login to the management interface again and change the login password to something different (and stronger!)

6 - Now connect an ethernet cable from the provided (Orcon) network port to the 'WAN' port on the router.

7 - Reboot the router and you should be good to go.

There are other things should do too like set up the wireless security. That can be done from the web management pages as well. Use WPA2 - PSK with a strong password.

Thanks Dylan. I wasn't sure what the login setup was for the router. If it has been reset though, (as mentioned in the OP) would those login details still be the same or would they have been reset to default?

The admin password has probably not been changed. If it has, you can factory reset the modem to default settings using the button on the back of the modem. Then start it up again, check the firmware you're using, and use the default admin password for that firmware. Then update the firmware if you're not on version 20.

Factory resetting the modem does not restore the firmware to an earlier version.

Not sure anyone has read the OP correctly. It sounds like the objective is to use the HG659 just as a switch - their landlord will have their router connecting to the Orcon Broadband service.

Two suggestions from me - plug the cable coming from network port in to one of the LAN ports in the HG659, not the WAN Port. Also disable DHCP on the HG659, you want the ip address allocation to come from your landlords router.

Though re-reading it I can see how it is misleading.

The "When I connect laptop directly to the port through network cable; it works perfectly fine." indicates to me that they are being supplied an ethernet connection from the landlords router, not a line with broadband on it.

Yeah, but then all devices would be on the same LAN as the other tenants in the house, which could be a good or a bad thing. Potentially amusing if they have airplay speakers you want to play music through.

Someone here previously had some airplay speakers on our staff wifi that I would sometimes play music to. No idea if they were even in this building. I guess they noticed 'cause they ended up adding a password.

Definitely DON'T do this. It will place you on the same LAN with all your other neighbors with them having access to anything connected to your router, (and you to anything they have connected!)

The setup you want is like this:

with the external router being the landlords router and the internal router being your router.

This setup is the one I outlined in my first post. However just posting now I realize there's one additional thing you will probably have to do which is to change the IP address range of your router. It is currently in the 192.168.1.xxx range and there's a good chance this is the same range as your landlords router. Since you don't want the same address range on both the WAN side and the LAN side of your router, add these steps to my earlier post:

5a - Find the 'LAN Setup' or 'Router Address' (or similar) page. Change the address from 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.5.1 (could be anything 2-254. I just randomly chose 5)

5b - Reboot router and computer.

5c - Login to the router at the new address of 192.168.5.1 The password is whatever you set in step 5.

No other routing should be necessary if setup as I posted above. The WAN port of the OP's router is simply seen as a DHCP client by the landlords router (just like the PC was). The only time that you may have trouble is if the OP, (or some application he uses) is trying to initiate access to his internal LAN from the internet. For all traffic initiated from within his own LAN network there should be no problem.
