I have just installed a VOIP/GSM media gateway using the Vodafone Family Plan and 2talk.
Free landline calls from my mobile phone and landline to my mobile for free per min!

Technically not free as you still have to pay the connection fee for the SIM card, but still a good use of different technologies. Well done!

... and this is very common in business, known as a CTU (Cellular Trunking Unit).

I am often intrigued by these types of threads, mainly because I have no idea what you are talking about but I do like the idea of free calls.
Anyone want to tell me where a newbie can learn at least what the terms mean?

And let's not forget that you breach your terms and conditions of use with this kind of carry on... so we have to tighten up the use of the service.

Take that to the logical conclusion and eventually you end up with a far more limited service than you started out with.

What I have used is an all in one VOIP and GSM Media Gateway in conjunction with 2talk. So when my local number rings it comes through to my mobile. When I ring the SIM in the gateway I get 2talk dial tone and break out to the rest of the world at 5c / per min.

Using a CTU is breach of your terms and conditions? I'd be good to know Vodafone's official position as I know of many reps that sell CTUs with Vodafone's blessing.

It's not the use of a CTU I'm pointing to but the potential breach of our fair use policy.

If your use of our Services materially exceeds estimated use patterns over any month, then your use will be excessive and/or unreasonable.

If your use is excessive and/or unreasonable Vodafone may contact you to advise you that your use is in breach of this Fair Use Policy.

We may then request that you stop or alter your use to come within our Fair Use Policy.

If the excessive use continues, we reserve the right to cut you off.

I don't really see your average home user breaching the 'excessive use' guidelines by doing normal calling. Sure, if it was an automated dialer or something then maybe - but I can't picture anyone wanting to sit on the phone for hours on end[1], and I certainly can't picture the callee wanting to talk to said person for hours on end either[2].

Lighten up Vodafone.
