After having my last computer for 7 years running XP and not having any problems with hardware or soft ware I have made the mistake to up grade to a new HP Omni 220 with windows 7 pre installed .Every thing set up well with no problems and had my internet and email up and running for some time , but then when ever the computer went into sleep mode it could not reconnect the repair tool would say local connection adapter needed to be reset which it would do ,I have fixed this by changing the power save so it doesn't go into sleep mode.I googled this and found it is a very common problem with Win 7 with no apparent easy fix.My next problem is when you have to restart after new soft ware install or updates etc it opens with a temporary user account with a dialog box saying if you will need to try again to get full access this you can do many times before you have access to your files and email.I also googled this and surprise surprise it also is a very common problem with no easy fix, of course HP help tell me this is a software problem so not their problem. Very frustrating I should have stayed with my old faithful machine.Has anyone experienced this and have you a remedy

have you tried running it with the UAC turned off , its intentions are good but it causes all sorts of problems that you dont need . i turned it off from day one and have never had the problems you have and i have never missed it

Excuse my ignorance what is the UAC I will give anything a try I did turn of automatic up dates but then thought I may need some of them so I have it alert me so I can decide but invariably there are times that you need to restart and then the fun begins. When I read the many queries on Google about both these problems you would expect some sort of a fix would be out there.I am not particularly computer savvy so am not keen to start making changes to the registry as some have suggested on google

you dont need to do anything drastic , all you have to do is change the settings.

click on the windows symbol on your desktop, should be lower left , type in uac and it should bring up the user account control settings click on it and then slide the bar to never notify and ignore warnings and save it, try it for a while and see if it solves your problem

Common sense is not as common as you think.

yeah windows 7 has some issues but I think what I did is go to the network
adapter settings in device manager and power functions might be in advance
settings and set it to disabled or one of the other options like wake on lan
I also login to admin account directly to bypass UAC rubbish

also I had much problems if windows blue screens or power issue or
over heats

it starts to corrupt permissions randomly.. and many weird things begin to happen
they corrupt in reg and file permissions so you need backup accounts
with admin incase and

a reg Nortons ghost backup! espc if use local admin account
and a old backup with everything setup to fall back too :)

I'm not running Windows 7.

a) The standard advice for this kind of thing is disable power management in the advanced properties of your network adaptor. This does not work for everyone.

b) Some users are reporting after they install the latest driver from the adapter manufacturer an additional new setting is present in the network adaptor properties - system idle power saver - so it looks like vendors are working on it. (some users report it is fixed after a manufacturer driver update with no changes to settings)

This is the sequence I would do things:

Try (a)
Get the latest driver from the HP site: see if there is any change in behavior
See if the new driver provides (b) and try that setting
Get the latest driver from the adaptor manufacturer site - you may have to force install - see if there is any change in behavior.
See if the new driver provides (b) and try that setting

Hope that helps!

[Edit: You could also try your luck with a support call to HP. They may be aware of the issue and have a patch or workaround available particular to that model]

sigh it is surprising to see the advice given to disable UAC and or run as local admin I mean seriously these are bad habits, and lead to nothing but headaches especially when the user is not computer savvy, it is the last thing I would be doing.

UAC is no where as bad as people seem to think it is, in fact it is a good thing (not as good as sudo) it can be painfull when installing older software written for XP where coding practices were lazy and software access system components that they really should not be.

changing the power config for your adapter as some mentioned might be worth looking at, but don't run as admin or disable UAC.

Something may look like a common problem when you google it, however because of the number of people who use windows 7, the problems are probably only affecting a very tiny percentage of people. You get problems with all OS', and personally I have had far less problems with win 7 than xp.

I you have got a new HP computer, you should contact HP fopr support for it. It could be a technical problem with it. The event viewer my help you figure out the problem.

I would have replied earlier but it has taken me 7 attempts to regain control and when I finally got there the local area connection adapter had to be reset so here I am
I find it hard to establish why there is a problem as I am the only user acct with only one password so why does it choose to allow me temporary access.I did try changing the user acct settings but that led to the many attempts to regain control so I have changed them back and had several more attempts to get here. One thing that I did change that may relate was the Norton starter anti virus ran out so removed it and installed AVG as I have used for many years. One suggestion on google was that some anti virus programs take longer on start up so if you input your password to quickly it may lead to temporary usage ,I have tried various timings with varied success.HP support unfortunately don't appear to operate out side of very tight parameters and could only suggest changing powersave to stop sleep mode and turn off auto updates so I don't have to restart the machine other that that no other suggestions.I did check on latest drivers but there were none newer available. This is incredibly frustrating and as I live in the country it is not just a matter taking it in to have it checked .IT IS STILL UNDER WARRANTY only 3 months old but HP say it is a software problem so not theirs.

I am pretty sure they have to provide support for windows, as they are an OEM provider which I presume was pre installed. What you could do is restore it back to the way it was when you got it using the restore dvds. I pressume it did come with restore media or a partition for you to build your own. If it still has the problem after that, then contact HP to tell them you have restored it and it is still broken.

AVG sucks misses many and many false alerts = upgrade to avast its free but watch their sneaky
small print for the free part else you be tricked to install the pro trial

as per other people.. run local admin can solve a few problems
but as I stated clearly.. make a full ghost backup and roll backs
as its more prone to be damage..

windows is a pile of issues

I also have found 64bit ver more problems then the 32bit
im now running.

have you tried resetting all the lan card settings,.. WinsockxpFix.exe
can be handy to reset things but you can do same with netsh command
should work in Win7 and XP as far as I know..

then you have to enter all the IPV4 ip settings again after though
but no biggy

I ran in to a trojan that trashed lan settings but was XP and was only
way I could fix the lan.. reinstalling drivers etc never fix it
was much deeper then that.. like reg settings and permissions
damaged.

Can you provide a link to an internet example which explains exactly what you are experiencing in that part.

Ok, that's what I thought. How is your logon set up right now:

1) Do you have your computer set to log in automatically?
2) Or do you click a user name and/or enter a password to log in?
