With the release of the much awaited Windows 7 less than a week away where is the pricing schedule? The rest of the world seems to have their pricing levels - why not us? I would have hoped that our media might have winkled the price out of MS - all we want to know is wether NZ prices will be more than a small car...

just a thought - when vista was first released genuine boxes were sold for next to nothing on trademe. like i saw a vista ultimate retail for selling for $250-300 when rrp was about ?$800. were they genuinely genuine - apparently they were! (trademe made them take pictures of the authentication parts i think)

but i guess in the face of a recession even people are trying to rip off others on trademe ... so maybe not with windows 7. but worth looking ... having said that now everyone on geekzone will leech onto them! hmm ...

The best price I've seen is $199 incl GST and delivery from Computer Lounge for Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium OEM.

PriceSpy usually have a good comparison of prices, but they don't yet list Windows 7.

Theres a fair bit of margin even in that price.. it will get lower than $199

isn't NZ a third world country why can't we get third world prices $499.05 for a retail version of windows 7 ultimate errr ok marginally better than when vista was first released but still dearer than vista ultmate as of now which was $407 at ascent

gee did you see them lovely looking retail boxes advertising win 7 oem whats the bet you wont get one when you buy it from comp lounge

I was of the understanding the licencing rules have changed here and you no longer need to purchase hardware to buy OEM, you just don't get all the fancy packaging.

According to Microsoft OEM is only for sale with a PC to a third party. So if you buy an OEM licence you aren't allowed to use it yourself. The licence is here. Microsoft's FAQ says:

"OEM System Builder software must be preinstalled and then resold to another party. If you are using the PC within your organization, this "resale" requirement will not be met. In addition, as a system builder preinstalling OEM System Builder software onto new PCs, this requires that you grant the end user license terms to the third party acquiring the PCs from you. If you are distributing the PCs within your organization, you can’t grant the end user license terms to yourself."

In theory non compliance with the licence in this way is the same as using pirated software. Has anyone heard of Microsoft enforcing this?

What is the minimum hardware you need to purchase to be eligible for OEM OS software?

Well once again this is a grey area. I havnt looked at the oem rules lately, but it used to be any thing deemed cruical for a pc to operate. Cpu, motherboard, ram etc etc. However you could argue a keyboard is needed, however the cheapest bit of needed hardware is actualy a cmos battery.
Thats pushing it a bit though lol. If you brought a cpu or ram you should be able to purchase oem

New Zealand are one of the poorer countries in the OECD.

So, why must we pay the highest prices in the world for windows 7?

Because, microsoft NZ are a bunch of greedy pigs at the trough.

You might say, but, they have lower economies of scale.

This might apply to hardware goods, but certainly not to software.

Or, does the NZ version of windows 7 come with extra features that the others do not get?

Come on microsoft, haven't you heard of globalisation?

I will be boycotting micosoft nz as long as they rip off nz consumers.

I'll import this from overseas.

Or, do ms nz have some good reason? It had better be good though.

Glad XP has still a year or five left in it.
That's a heck of a lot of money for a coaster with a laser track on it.
