Well in June I bought what seemed like a great deal, 4x 32gb MicroSD cards, for $83 .. less than $21 a card. On Groupon, so thought it would be fairly reliable....

Took a long time to come, there was a five week ship time, but further delays...
Eventually got my four 32gb class 10 cards... and they are fakes.

More like class 4 speed, and only the first 2gb data writes then you don't get anything more on to it, fake controller reports 30gb to the OS. A bit of forensics and there's really only 2gb there. Partition applications aren't necessarily fooled, one case i could only make a 2gb partition - it spotted the fake.

diganostics from H2testw:
The media is likely to be defective.
1.8 GByte OK (3780375 sectors)
28.8 GByte DATA LOST (60408041 sectors)

28.7 GByte corrupted (60379136 sectors)
14.1 MByte aliased memory (28905 sectors)

H2testw version 1.3
Writing speed: 10.6 MByte/s
Reading speed: 14.2 MByte/s
H2testw v1.4
Damn it

It was on Groupon.co.nz and the vendor was BuyNowDirect (in aus)

Know at least one other person who got suckered with these. Must be thousands of people around the country and I bet a few on geekzone here??

Have written emails to both groupon and buynow we'll see what happens.

Fake cards are a massive problem at present.

And as for issues with Groupon in NZ - after reading all the customer complaints about them I'd certainly never buy anything from them.

I had the same issue last year with another daily deal site - http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=97&topicid=86737

Who was the vendor?

The issue here isnt the brand/model of the card, more the retailer/supplier. The OP could have easily thought that he was buying Sandisk Extreme for example

The other problem with fake cards is that a large % are Sandisk fakes - because it is a well known brand.

I remember when I was in SHangai 2 years ago there were entire shops selling "1TB" USB thumb drives. Like blatantly advertising their fraud in the window.

And at the same shopping mall there was a complete US army uniform including helmet and guys selling mont blanc pens next to a sign saying that the mall "protects" against sellers copying brands with a few logos listed including Mont Blanc.

Lol china needs some anti fraud laws.

BIG UPDATE ON THIS ONE!!!!!!

Hi Kevin,

Thanks for contacting Groupon New Zealand.

As requested, I have now cancelled your Groupon for Buy Now Direct and refunded the amount of $246 back to your original method of payment. The merchant has also been informed that this voucher is no longer valid. Please allow up to 7-10 working days for the payment to appear in your account.

Please note that this is a reverse transaction, meaning that the amount will be credited back retroactively to the date of purchase. When reading your statement, please look at the date: 15.06.2012

Feel free to contact us again if you have any further queries.

Kind regards,

Their email crossed with one from me saying

Just to FYI you that I'm fully aware I'm not alone in this matter.I strongly suggest that Groupon immediately issue a reversal of credit card charges for all these transactions across Australia and NZ and release a media statement to that effect. Regards

Hopefully they take a positive approach to this and do as suggested. Not just to complaining customers.

At this point I'm awarding Groupon an A++++ rating for their reaction
WELL DONE

The fact that they have counterfeit product doesn't annoy you a little bit? A+++++ is a bit too much in my opinion.

Couple of things.
I haven't seen anything to suggest Groupon would have been aware.
The response from them I've posted is the end (hopefully) of a email trail extending over 7 weeks.
Personally I don't think they had much option but a decisive response from Groupon must be encouraged and this has been the only "issue" transaction I've had with them.

Thanks

The vendor doesn't seem like he's really offering quality product, anyway - perhaps a bit of research would have saved the subsequent trouble. http://www.buynowdirect.com.au/

Well Groupon have done a great job - refunding the money days after being notified of the issue.

It was BuyNowDirect that had the counterfeit goods; Groupon would have had to have been incredibly thorough to pick up the issue themselves
