Trial is for World Exchange to test out various install options and heres how it goes...
2 guys and a guy learning the ropes turn up at 8:45am. establish a few things about install and get cut and drill disclaimer
signed. Then they drive off to the end of the road where the fibre box is and I don't really see them for a couple of hours apart from occassional visits to do something in the pit by the foorpath outside my house. As the house was built in late 90's it had a Telecoms wonderous coax TV cables outside the house so this is what the installers use to draw the fibre down.
Guys from World Exchange drive up about 11am and deliver the router for the install and explain to Chorus guys how to setup (i.e. plug in and wait)
By lunch they have drawn the fibre through the duct and are looking at then drawing it into the cavit space where my phone wire lives. the guys wiring the house originally went for aesthetics over ease of fixing and put the Telecom wires up a connduit to inside the wall cavity (must have been before the GIB went on) and then out through hole in brick to official Telecom demarc box on outside). For those thinking of UFB install have a look at where the existing Telecom wires go as may be more difficult than you think to get at wires.
After lunch the hybrid cable from the junction outside to the inside ONT position (in my case a cabinet installed by my electrician in a recent house extension). The cable then got spliced to the white inside cable and this poked through hole in the ceiling into the cabinet in garage. To do this once again they use the existing cable from Telecom phone to pull the fibre up inside the wall then pull back and reattach again outside.
The idea of the hybrid I believe is to go to the ONT then the copper part is plugged into the phone socket in ONT or router (in my case) and then attached to outside demarc box to the existing Telecom cable inside the house hence ONT now powering the home phone network.
Well the cabinet that was chosen by my electrician was a little small but the UFB site mentions talking to your installer or
electrician about install needs and that is what I did but cabinet needed to be longer to fit all the kit really.
So connector to ONT spliced to inside hybrid cable and then the install inside the cabinet started. Problem - cabinet inset into wall between uprights and then had 10mm space behind then Gib on other side of wall. ONT clip in connector needs flat screw attachment behing where the ONT will clip in. After 2 small holes in wall on other side we removed the screws and used combination of zip tie and 3 3M command strips to secure to inside of cabinet (once again if you have a cabinet for install have a look at how much space or get installer to use screws into the metal not through the existing holes)
That done we then screw with metal drill screws the router clip to inside of cabinet and attach to the ONT and wait for power up.
Unfortunately router works but not talking to network due to Chorus not supplying an initial DHCP IP address I think so could not provision router and connect to broadband.

All together it took till 5pm to get this far with 2.5 guys - just over 8 hours.
This should have been an easier install (guys reckon their easiest install was 4 hours x 2 guys).
What went wrong then?
- Took ages to draw fibre from fibre cabinet - can't speed that really
- Would have probably been quicker with a quick overview before install to evaluate problems and arrive with solutions intact
- More attachment options might speed install for ONT to various places. Would have been easier to attach to a wall as drill then clip in.
Overall the install takes ages but could be partially done by a normall electrician or installer to allow Chorus guys to get fibre
to outside connection then splice outside and inside.
Have some pictures on a Picasa link to look at.
