Hi

I am trying to decide if I should switch from VDSL to Cable internet.

Prior to the earthquake in Chch (where we live) we had telstra clear cable internet with no disconnection issues as far as we can remember. After the quake we had to temporarily move to a non-telstra area so changed to telecom (ADSL). When we returned home we continued with ADSL and changed to Snap on recommendation from friends. We have had continual disconnection problems since. We recently changed to VDSL with Snap as I was told the internal wiring issues would be bypassed. They have indeed installed a master filter. We have a new modem (Fritz box) and chorus have checked their line from their office and said it is ok. We are still getting multiple disconnections daily, which particularly annoys my kids who are into gaming.

So ... I can arrange for Chorus to send a technician out to check their line. If they find no fault it will cost me $270!
or... I can change back to cable. Vodafone has now got plans for 250GB for the same price as Snap.
I have generally been pleased with Snap's service but we are sooo fed up with disconnections.

However I do not understand how the wiring for cable internet works (we still have our original cable installed) and whether this would mean no disconnections. Please explain this for me and provide any info that may help me decide what to do. Thanks.

I'm assuming you have a Fritz!Box 7360 / 7390 from Snap! with the latest updates
Could you please post screenshots of these following pages
Internet->DSL Information->DSL
Internet->DSL Information->Spectrum
Internet->DSL Information->Statistics
System->Event Log->Internet

These screenshots could help diagnose why you keep getting disconnects.
It may be as simple as changing a few settings as I'm sure you would rather resolve the issue if possible rather than going through the hassle of changing providers.

Ok I have found out how to access the fritz pages on the internet and have saved one to my clipboard (by print screen) and saved it in a word document. Then I clicked on the upload image button below and chose the word file. Then I clicked upload image and then gallery, but it is not in my gallery. What am I doing wrong? Thx.

Word documents aren't images. Please print screen and paste into paint, save each one as a new one then upload them all to your gallery and it will show up.
As for the event log you can just copy and paste that directly from the fritz box.

Your stats look excellent (better than mine, grr).
The only thing I can see is a few log entries with: DSL not responding (no DSL synchronization)
I reckon it would be worth sending the logs to Snap! and getting Chorus to come out and check the Cabinet.
BUT! Before you do that I would first try downgrading the firmware of the Fritz!Box as the newer firmware is known to have problems, I had to downgrade as my one wouldn't connect at all.

I would still appreciate an explanation of the way cable internet is wired so I am fully informed. Can cable internet disconnect? and if so what determines this? An excellent article from this site explained the way the copper wiring worked, even I understood most of it!

Well by the looks of it it's either the new Frtiz!Box firmware or the Chorus cabinet that's the problem.
As I said first try downgrading the firmware as that will eliminate the Fritz!Box from being the problem.
As for the likeliness of Chorus finding a problem, well I'm no expert (my field is software engineering) so I can only make an educated guess that they have a mid-to-high chance of finding a problem by the looks of things.

As for cable internet, I don't know too much but yes cable internet can disconnect. Google is your friend :-P

Cable internet CAN disconnect, it's just far less likely to because of a few reasons. First, cable internet uses infrastructure separate from the telephone network. This was installed much later than the telephone network (Christchurch's cable network is just over a decade old). This means that the cables are much newer and less likely to be damaged. The cable network also uses a different type of cable, coaxial, vs the telephone networks twisted pair. Coaxial is better at handling high frequencies and is less susceptible to noise than twisted pair.

In saying that, a fault-less VDSL connection should never disconnect either. Mine has been up for over 600 hours, and that's only because the power went out a month ago.

Thanks. Our internet has just been off for over an hour! Am trying to ring snap, but as they connected my phone via the internet at the same time, without my informed consent, I can't ring them on my home phone.

My boys, who were in a "ranked" game, are livid!!!

I'm guessing you've tried turning it off and on again. Did you try downgrading the firmware?
If possible can you post screenshots of the fritz box again.
