As I've posted in an earlier thread, the cabinet I (presumably) am connected to was due to be upgraded in April. My understanding was that, while I'd still be on ADSL1 for a while after the upgrade, I would see a boost in achieved speeds once off the Conklin. I've been testing every few days to see if this happened but my best speedtest results have remained consistent at around 1.35Mbps down/ 0.45Mbps up.

I've seen a few posts where Chorus people have checked cabinet status and I was wondering if someone could take a look just so I know if it's been delayed or has happened and it's now on my ISP to do something. The cabinet is Collingwood code CW.

If you are posting regarding DSL speeds please check that

- you have reset your modem and router

- your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing

- you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap

Make sure you provide information for other users to help you. If you have not already done it, please EDIT your post and add this now:

- Your ISP and plan

- Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)

- Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin)

- Your general location (or street)

- If you are rural or urban

- If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin

- If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service

- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

It may be upgraded in April but before customers are connected it could be quite some time later

Yeah, I thought it might be something along those line. It would be nice to know when actual cutover is likely if that's the case though. The public info just says upgraded in April. As a customer I don't much care if there's a shiny new cabinet in April if I'm not connected until some unspecified date potentially months in the future.

It is showing as available now in the Chorus Coverage Maps. But you may still be in the process of being cut over. If you are with Telecom what's your home phone number and I can run a line test to see.

Not with Telecom unfortunately. Thanks for the offer though. Is cutover likely to be soon then if it's reported as available for new connections?

The cabinet is stood up and left running with ADSL1 profile for approx 2-3 weeks.

A scheduled profile change then automatically "bumps" the profiles up to ADSL2+

The cutover to ADSL2+ for Collingwood will take place on evening of 12 May. So expect a speed increase on 13 May.

From then on you can order an enhanced service such as EUBA or VDSL.

Unfortunately the placement of the cabinet means that much of the "centre" of the township, including me, is outside of the hotzone there. My current line attenuation is 29.0 dB down so VDSL2 is unlikely to be a goer.

That attenuation could be down to poor house wiring. If you know it's all good, then yes you are too far away for VDSL. If you look in to a possible wiring issue and find one, you may find that attenuation will half.

Master Filters generally do this.

I can remember when VDSL2 was almost a no go cause my stats were unstable.

Turns out water can really mess stuff up cleaned up with a master filter(with new cable cause the old one wasn't good enough) new jack point and if I had stayed on ADSL2+ I would of had 24/1.4 easy, like max out the ADSL2+ standard. But since I went VDSL2 I got on the 17A profile with 65/10 from the modem stats.

You don't know mate till you try. If it doesn't work out they can always roll you onto ADSL2+ or whatever is good enough and stable enough.

It's possible that the house wiring isn't the best but it's a rental and I'm not that interested in fronting several hundred dollars on rewiring/master splitter (there's only one socket and the modem is plugged into that anyway) chasing VDSL when I'm likely to move on within a year or so. I know the landlord certainly isn't.

The attenuation seems roughly in line with what I'd expect given the distance from the cabinet allowing for some twists and turns anyway. The house is ~1.75kms from the cabinet as the crow flies and the attenuation is what you'd expect at just over 2km. That seems about right. I believe I should get 12-16Mbps on ADSL2+. I've been living with 1.3 Mbps for a long time so anything near that will feel blazingly fast to me (for a few months at least)!

with all isps the connection/wiring is free for most except bigpipe and no contracts
and the chorus guy or whoever gets contracted out there will rewire everything to 1 jack point at your desired that is closest to the ETP
they foot the master filter and wiring bill for you if you sign up for vdsl as as i said if vdsl just doesn't want to function well then they can roll you back to whatever adsl is available anyway at no charge (in my experience with orcon they won't even charge you until they know what's working and what isn't)

You're right. I wasn't aware that the contract VDSL installs included the wiring. I'm on no contract naked DSL at the moment and a bit wary of taking on a contract but I might give it a shot if I feel happy I'm staying put for 12 months. I'm fairly sure I'm just too far away for it to work though. The cabinet is a way down the road to catch more people overall but because the bulk of the houses/businesses are right by the shore it means they're over 2kms away.

I'm still made up with the likelihood of getting 12Mbps. Downloading a big Steam game in less than a week becomes a possibility.
