Hello forum, so i'm writing this at 4:37 am where my wonderful spark broadband is giving me a 112kb/s Down, 600-900 ping and a 50kb/s Up.

Now ive lived out here for a couple of years and never really got i guess "use" to the whole rural very slow internet thing as I am an avid online gamer and use the internet to make a living.

So crazily i was actually getting up at times like 2am/3am where speeds would be decent enough to do things online: 66 ping, 400kb/s Down, 50kb/s down (internet is pretty much unusable all day unless these times).

However for the last month or so this hasnt been enough as even at these times, speeds are the same as during the day (I guess more people have started to wake up at these times?)

Chorus told us at the start of the year we'd be getting fibre sometime next year, however we are right out at the beach (before the last bridge opposite tasmine view road (160-200 Bethells road_ )) and i doubt this is going to happen due to how far out we are.

However is there any plans for any upgrade of sorts to give us internet out here which isnt this slow? I looked into RBI and am not sure if we're covered however is there anything else that maybe is happening in the future? Wireless options (farmside etc) aren't an option unfortunetly.

Just wondering if We'll ever get stable, fast internet where the ping would stay under 100 all day lol. Anyone care to shed some light? Much appreciated, thanks.

Hello... Our robot found some keywords in your post, so here is an automated reply with some important things to note regarding broadband speeds.

If you are posting regarding DSL speeds please check that

- you have reset your modem and router

- your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing

- you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap

- your tests are always done on an ethernet connection to the router - do not use wireless for testing

- you read this topic and follow the instructions there.

Make sure you provide information for other users to help you. If you have not already done it, please EDIT your post and add this now:

- Your ISP and plan

- Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)

- Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin)

- Your general location (or street)

- If you are rural or urban

- If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin

- If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service

- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

I recommend you read these two blog posts:

- Is your premises phone wiring impacting your broadband performance? (very technical)

- Are you receiving a substandard ULL ADSL2+ connection from your ISP?

What's your address? What does Chorus's map say? "Bethell's Beach" covers a big area. I would say wireless is most likely your best bet.

there is an address in the first post

chours map says >5mbps, and those addresses are 250-500m from the cabinet (yes we dont know where the cable goes though)

Interesting to know WAK/J is off WAK/B.. its my understanding that WAK/B is pretty heavily congested (by human expectations, not going to argue if it meets certain speed limits as i dont have the stats for it handy.)

there is due for an upgrade to WAK/B.

upgrades to WAK/C are currently in progress (due to be completed June 2015 though.) and WAK/B is planned for the same period.

Maybe when WAK/B is upgraded, there will be a bit of room for WAK/J to speed up just a little bit? or is its uplink back to WAK separated from anything else?

While chorus is poking around, ild like to ask why is the WAK/B upgrade down to supply VDSL but not ADSL >5mbit? is this a shape map error, or simply a different style upgrade compared to say WAK/C

to put it simple, down the very beach end, your going to have a problem... near long road is a bit better and being upgraded at some stage in the near future.

Wireless RBI is an option, Depending on where you are, Where your serviced from and if the signal levels are enough that Vodafone will prevision you.

There is a WISP that operates in the area, however last i checked does not have vision over Bethells due lack of interest.....

Ild recommend catching up with this thread, http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=49&topicid=152116 a local who also had issues with WAK/J

i have friends who live right ontop of WAK/B and shudder at pings there so as a gamer, i can only expect WAK/J would have problems tenfold, We live in a beautiful area and there area certain prices to pay unfortunately...

So would you like the wholesale price of broadband to go down under the recommendation from the comcom or further expansion of the RBI to roll ISAMS to more rural areas.

As we as a country can't have it both ways.

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Free setup code: R587125ERQ6VE. Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

They are rightfully investing in fibre.. as that's the future. However it doesn't really deal with the non trivial number of buba punters out there in rural areas.

I am not sure what all this WAK/J and WAK/B stands for sorry, as for the adress i'm at is 199, right before the bridge and there is a cabinet litterally right outside our driveway. I sometimes see chorus workers sitting there but not so recently and still am not sure what they're doing. As for the upgrade did you say that they are upgrading to VDSL? Or am i mistaken. Thank you for your help though!

WAK/J and /B are the names of the Chorus cabinets providing your interwebs. They are the big box on the side of the road and will have WAK/.. in black lettering with a yellow highlighter colour for the background. It has the DSLAM in the box along with the copper from your house to patch through it.

There are wholesale tools provided to all ISPs that they can look up the status of said cabinet on the Chorus site. Plus Chorus have had some RBI information in the past about upgrades publicly and always mention the cabinet name such as WAK/..

WAK is the main exchange area and then the /A /B is the name given to each cabinet not in the exchange.

WAK/C/B/J are cabinet IDs.

WAK/C is on Wairere road, where Gregory intersects.

WAK/B is at the bottom of the Bethells hill, where Bethells intersects with Te henga, just after the one way bridge next to the bird farm (or atlest what used to be one anyway)

WAK/J is at the beach end, just before Tasman View Road. This cabinet is not being upgraded as far as i can see, Which you appear to be practically inside of actually.

Given the details Chorus provided above about how WAK/J is fed i can see it unlikely to be upgraded but depending on the answer about uplinks, it could be a little more smoother after the upgrade.. That would be up to chorus to answer really though, i cant speak for them.

If you would prefer it in a map, here.

The WAK/J cabinet has copper backhaul - there is no fibre to Bethells Beach.  With the number of users on this cabinet and the limited backhaul there is congestion in the  backhaul link.

Once the WAK/B cabinet (at the end of Te Henga Road) is upgraded, (due in the next 6 months) the fibre will be 4 km's closer to Bethells Beach.  That still leaves a five kilometre gap to fill.

The cost of the WAK/J cabinet upgrade is in the order of $400,000 (including the 5 km fibre build).

With the funding challenge we face, there is no plan for Chorus to upgrade this cabinet.

If you want to be put in touch with others in your community actively working on this issue then PM me.

Great to see the transparency in the costs for that, as i understand it there is a bunch down at the beach end who are trying to get "better internet"... now they have a number to consider!

i suspect the others you mention would be this group however..

on the note of upgrades, i must say, the rollout to WAK/C is actually looking really good, never expected there to be hatches installed along the way all of sudden!
