I am connected to gigatown Dunedin 1Gbit fibre. As i understand it, Chorus uses GPON with a 16 way optical splitter at the cabinet for residential connections. If so, how can I be getting gigabit speeds? Or is Chorus using a p2p fibre link for gigabit connections?

- your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing

- you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap

- Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin)

- Your general location (or street)

- If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin

- If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service

- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

So it is contested to the OLT?

Another question too, when i change from say a 30Mbit to a 100Mbit plan what actually happens? Does Chorus connect remotely to my ONT and make a software change there? Or do they go physically change something in a cabinet?

GPON supports 2.4Gbps down and 1.2Gbps up. This bandwidth (less multicast traffic) is shared between all users.

1Gbps P2P will cost you around 10x the price of GPON.

Basically everything sbiddle said.

As far as I understand it, splitter ratios are outside regulation, but i've heard Chorus themselves say they do 16-way splits. I'm pretty sure all other LFC's are doing 24-way -- not that it really matters. (2.48Gbps / 24 = pretty much 100Mbps). So you should be able to get 100Mbps fairly guaranteed even without paying for CIR.

Basically gigatown is very oversubscribed, but that's why it's so cheap - (it doesn't cost Chorus a cent more). For all intents and purposes this isn't likely to matter. If you really need a true 1Gbps then you should have no problem paying for it :)

There is no physical or remote changes it all through put control done at the PON end

a very bacsic way to look at the UFB network would be to image it as a lot of large pipes coming and going along the road and ending at individual delivery points - each of theses pipes is capable of 'Gigabit flows' but at the 'source' end there are a series of taps that restrict the flow - these are set to what ever you have requested to be delivered - change delivery plans and at the source end the taps are adjusted to meet that change
