Hi Geekzone, before I fire off a grumpy email, I though I would ask your collective wisdom if I'm barking up the wrong tree.

We live in a 1 year old 3 house subdivision with a shared driveway. We are the front house. I ordered our UFB the minute it became available in our street, and it was installed by chorus a couple of weeks later with no issues. That was about 3 months ago. To do the installation they had to dig up a bit of our front garden. As I understand it, there are ducts running from this spot to all 3 houses, so all they had to do is pull a new fiber down the duct for the installation. They had to do a bit of digging to get to the duct, but it was all returned to more or less the original condition. Sure I had to do a bit of tidying, but nothing major.

When our neighbours in house B heard that we now had UFB, they immediately ordered it as well (we had all been living with 3Mb ADSL since we moved in). It took them 3 months, but it was finally installed this week by Clearvision Communications. I've never heard of them before, but I assume they are legit. Once again, they had to dig up our front garden. (They did the installation for house C at the same time, thankfully.)

  1. We did not give, nor were asked for consent to dig up our property. Had we been asked for consent we would have freely given it, on the condition that the garden be restored to its original condition. I know the pain of a slow ADSL conection and would not want to delay my neigbours moving to UFB.
  2. The garden has been left in a complete mess. The fiber cables are exposed, and there is dirt and bark strewn all over. They couldn’t be bothered filling the hole they had dug, so just plonked one of the decorative rocks in it.

So....if you are still reading after that long rant, I am wondering who I should complain to, and if I am even being reasonable complaining?

Would love to hear your thoughts.

Don't bother complaining - the damage is minor, nobody would listen and nothing would happen.
Nobody can tidy up your garden as well as you can, just move on and be happy to have fibre  smile

Only issue I can see is the grass outside the wooden barrier. The rest of it is just decorations that are not in the same place.

When you put things around infrastructure you have to accept that they will get disturbed when it is maintained etc.

I suspect that by giving consent for your own property a while back, you are also deemed to have given consent for everyone else on your shared driveway to get UFB installed.

How long has it been and do you know the job is complete?

You will spend less time sorting it yourself (while mumbling F#$kwits under your breath) than hanging on a phone getting it sorted.

Is it even your property? Hard to tell from the photo but guess that's your front fence? In which case the fence will be your boundary line. Semantics aside, just tidy it up and move on. It's not like it's actually damaged really.

Well ok - I understand you are a little miffed.
I imagine that there probably should have been copious amounts of paperwork and delays - possibly even on your own install - are you on a crosslease?
On the other hand you and your neighbors all have UFB installed pretty quickly by most standards and they havent made too much mess - though I can only guess this from the photo.

I think perhaps you feel better having got it off your chest now - maybe just right it off to being a good neighbor.

How long do you reckon it will take you to tidy it up?

Oh and while you at it, remove that weed cloth, its the devils material, and only temporarily stops weeds, until the seeds all fall on top of it and away they go. Also planting anything else later becomes a mission :)

personally I feel they should reinstate to what was there before the work was done, without before and after shots its hard to tell the extent of the change. However, as others have said you could spend a few weeks energy and stress trying to get it done
or you could spend an hour and fix it yourself.

Go on the council website and in their GIS system, you can usually confirm where your actual boundary line is

Thanks for the feedback everyone.

Yes, it's definitely on our property. I have a copy of the council site plan here, but you are right, I'm sure it will be easier to grab a new bag of bark and fix it up myself than trying to get them to do it.

I'm still miffed though!

Hi Scott,

Can you please PM us your address and contact details, so that we can get that cleaned up for you. Once the install is complete there should be another team arranged to reinstate any areas that we have had to dig up. We will follow up with our service partner in your area to get this sorted for you asap. ^Jon

You mentioned that some fibre was exposed, hard to see that in the photo but shouldn't be exposed unless its designed as a surface install. Also the rock thrown in the hole sounds like a bad idea since the reinstatement team may not know the hole is there, but they would have to cover with something until they can fill the hole.

Time to find a new industry!
