Hi

I'm currently having a new house built, which is due to be completed in mid-December. The house is in a new sub-division which is fibre-ready, and I'm trying to decide which ISP to sign-up with.

At my current address I've got a DSL connection with a 2talk VoIP line. My router is a NetComm NF4V, and I've got an old analogue cordless phone connected to the phone port in the back of the router.

For the fibre connection at the new house, I'd ideally like 100Mbps downstream speed, and a data cap of at least 80GB per month. I'll also need a VoIP line for making local/national calls (although it wouldn't necessarily need to be with 2talk).

At this stage I'm considering going with either:

  • Orcon's 100/20Mbps fibre service, with 100GB data cap and Genius homephone included ($85 per month); or
  • Bigpipe's 100/20Mbps unlimited naked fibre service for $79 per month, and keeping my current 2talk VoIP line at $11.50 per month ($90.50 total).
Keen to hear any recommendations on which option might be best, and whether there are any other ISPs offering better value plans than this?

I'm also trying to figure out how the homephone setup will work once I'm in the new house (mainly due to my lack of understanding of how modern house wiring/VoIP works). The electrician has installed a comms box in the garage, and run cat6 cable to every room in the house. I assume the router will need to be located in the comms box, because that is where the fibre ONT will be located (as well as all the cat6 cable!).

  • Does this mean that the base station for the cordless phone will also need to be located in the garage, connected to the phone port on the router?
  • Or will I be able to put the phone in the living room, and connect it back to the router over the cat6 cable somehow? If so, will this require purchasing a new VoIP phone, or will it be possible with my current cordless phone?

Thanks in advance for any help/suggestions!

Hello... Our robot found some keywords in your post, so here is an automated reply with some important things to note regarding broadband speeds.

If you are posting regarding DSL speeds please check that

- you have reset your modem and router

- your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing

- you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap

- your tests are always done on an ethernet connection to the router - do not use wireless for testing

- you read this topic and follow the instructions there.

Make sure you provide information for other users to help you. If you have not already done it, please EDIT your post and add this now:

- Your ISP and plan

- Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)

- Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin)

- Your general location (or street)

- If you are rural or urban

- If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin

- If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service

- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

I recommend you read these two blog posts:

- Is your premises phone wiring impacting your broadband performance? (very technical)

- Are you receiving a substandard ULL ADSL2+ connection from your ISP?

you connect the voice port on the router to one of the cat6 cables in any of the rooms in your house and then place the base station there. just need the right cable for it, which many places sell.

ideally you would have a patch panel and patch it all in, if you want more than one "phone" jack, you could use one of these: http://signetcomms.co.nz/catalogues/SIGNET-ST2210-Voice-Hub-for-FTTH.pdf

You can put the ONT in the comms box and the router in the living room.

Run one cat6 cable from the ONT GE port to the router WAN port.
Run another cat6 cable from the router LAN port back to the comms room. Connect the other end to a switch, then connect the rest of the ports on the switch to the other cat6 cables.
