Sorry if this is in the wrong place but i couldn't find a maxnet forum.

I am having problems with my isp.I have been having issues for 2 months now and now they have given up.Basically my router is connected at 4,800 but my max speed test to anywhere is 2000.I am in wellington and to test to wellington is my best at 2100.
I have tried new router,new pc,cables etc and telecom has tested my line (they connect me at 4800).
Can this be anything apart from my isp slowing my connection down.Friends in the same area as me speed test around 4,500 to the same sites (speedtest.net) with other isps.Before i change isps i would like to know the opinions of other people.
ps:i took this pc to a friends house and speed tests were 4,500 to wellington.

The most likely cause (considering your throughput is well below your connect rate) will be insufficient backhaul, or inter/national transit capacity through Maxnet.

Also, swapping your line filters and things will only make a difference if your connect rate is below the maximum throughput, not vice versa.

My guess is that the 'exchange' you're connected to is a conklin with the single 2mbps backhaul which might explain the slower than expected speeds vs sync rate. If you're getting slow national speed then you know its not an isp issue as national traffic is never an issue for ISPs. Do you notice that the speeds are always the same anytime of the day? if so then it will be the backhaul to the exchange/DSLAM or telecom still have you on a old 2mbps/128k profile by mistake (it does happen and you'll need to call maxnet again to check what line profile you're really on as they will have access to this) ,if its fast during crazy hours of the morning then its congestion.

just some comparisons from my connection. Maxnet seem fine to me :)

We had a similar problem with Maxnet a couple of years ago, although ours was clearly a congestion problem. They seemed unable to do anything about it, so I just gave up in the end and changed to another ISP.

I was a geek before the word was invented!

Thank you for the replys.When i joined maxnet my national speeds were about 4500 in all my old tests ( i tested weekly).Now for the last 2 1/2 months day and night 2000 is my max.If telecom had me on the wrong plan would my router connection still be about 4,800 or would that drop to about 2000.Telecom has tested my line and said nothing is wrong so maxnet wont investagate this further.I have contacted another isp to change to but i fear if the problem is telecom my new isp will have the same problem.
Even if this is not maxnets fault the way they are handling it is extremely poor and after 2 1/2 months just shutting the ticket because its too hard is disgusting and i shouldn't have to try to fix the problem.
Is there any other tests i can do to test if it is the telecom exchange or maxnets system?.

If you were on the wrong line profile, you would sync at a lower rate.
In an analogical sense, connection rate is how thick the hose is. Throughput is how much water you're able to push through it.

Yeah my Maxnet customer service experience was basically the same. They asked me to do some tests and send the results to them, and in the end they told me that the problem was at the exchange and there was nothing they could do. I changed to Telstra Clear PDQ and the problems went away.
I started using Maxnet because of the filtering service they provide, which is great when you've got children using the net. So I didn't want to change, but in the end had no choice because the performance was so bad. Funny thing was I didn't tell the kids that we'd changed, and it was many months before they tried to access anything dodgy on the net!

Ok, this is news to me, since when did ADSL2+ go online down here?! Not supposed to be for a couple of months at least. Wicked!

So yeah, all good with Maxnet here in Invers.

Tahii - At a blind guess, your exchange may have been upgraded to ADSL2+ however the date you're mentioning may be for cabinetisation in your area?

Might pay to double check on http://telecomwholesale.co.nz/maps and see. Lucky you though! I'd love 13mbit throughput!

Correct - that is what I was referring to. I think I'm getting a little caught up in the wording - I didn't think we were going to get ADSL2+ without cabinetisation.

Either way I'm happy :)

Hi Paul,

what are you line sync rates like now? Well when you do change ISPs please post what national speeds you get as there is no reason why you're having issues.

can you get faster speed to other sites besides speedtest.net ? what are your speeds test results like to snap in cahristchurch as there might be an issue for you and the wellington test?

Hey Paul,

There is a known issue on your D~Slam. The issue 'would have been' has been escalated to the Telecom forum to be resolved.

Your ISP 'would have' apologised that this has not been resolved in a timely manner, however, they 'would have' contacted Telecom sevral times (in the last 2 weeks) regarding your specific connection. I believe Telecom 'would have' officially recognised the issue and 'would have' escalated this to there official forum.

The main issue is that both Maxnet and Telecom wholesale 'would have' agreed that the major issue is the backhaul from your D~Slam to the greater internet needs to be increased.

This can take an extended period switching to another ISP but staying on the same D~Slam will not resolve your issue.

I rung maxnet today but unfortunatly i got nowhere.Basically telecom guarantees 1mb connection and i am getting more than that so there is nothing they can do.They weren't prepared to make sure telecom hasn't changed my plan by accident etc because my line has already been tested so maxnets situation is there is no problem take it or leave it.

Insane yes i also tried the nzdsl site and get the same readings.If there is a problem at my exchange maxnet should be fighting to get it fixed but i guess there hands are tied so can only pass on what they are provided.I myself am disgusted my speed tests can go from 4000 to 2000 overnight and no one is accountable and it just put down to throughput and overused internet.

Esas how do you know there is a problem at my d-slam because i didn't say where i lived ?,if there was a problem and maxnet simply said there is a problem with the d-slam and it is being worked on i would understand and give them time to work it out.But they closed the ticket and did nothing.Do you work for maxnet and can you share more information on the topic please.

W2krules i am looking at going to telstra clear also.Do you have any problems with them and is it good for gaming.I will be on the PDQ max/max plan.

Thanks everyone for the replys,it would be nice if our isps told us the truth because if it is the exchange and i change isps it may not fix the problem but i am sure it will.

Sorry to hear about your problems, but it's very similar to my experience. Had no problems at all with Telstra Clear, except sometimes speeds would slow down in the mornings. I guess they have a lot of business customers - the flipside being that speeds in the evening were great!

I changed to Orcon last year, who were also fine until we were changed to their LLU network. Great performance, but broadband drops out regularly and can take 1-2 hours to come back. So I may also be looking for a new ISP soon...

Anarkist unfortunatly us end users only hear one side and that is from our isp.They deal with telecom and i am sure each will blame the other.Unfortunatly we never hear telecoms side so we never know what to beleive.
Maybe telecom can send the end user a email saying they have tested the line etc and send the results.They can use a non reply email address but people like myself can see something happening.
As i am writing this my phone has just rung twice and disconnected so i think my line is being tested.In a perfect world the end user should be told the truth but when companys have to deal with other companys when problems happen its too easy just to blame the other expecially when the end user has no way of confirming or denying it.
