Hi all,

I'd welcome some creative solutions from the Geekzone community to the following problem I'm facing:

Situation:

  • I live in Auckland and I'm with Orcon on Orcon@Home Gold+

  • Next week I'm moving out of my current house and 5 weeks later we're moving into a new house a few hundred meters away.

What I'd like:

  • My services to be suspended, my phone number to be held for me - ideally redirected to another number temporarily - and then everything reactivated at the new address 5 weeks later.

  • Key requirement is to retain the phone number if possible.

What's I'm facing:

  • According to www.telecomwholesale.co.nz/maps Both my current address and new address are on the same exchange. They have both been cabnetised, but are on different (adjacent) cabinets.

  • It turns out that my current plan is not available at the new address and I'd have to go on the standard Gold plan - $10 more per month and no caller ID :-(

  • It might not be possible to move my number even if I was transferring straight across - due to different cabinets.

  • With the 5 week gap, my number might not actually be requestable at the new house - by Orcon or anyone else.

So, what can I do?

I'm quite happy with Orcon, but not keen to pay more money and to lose my phone number. The only solution I can think of so far is to try and move my number to something like Vodafone's Home Phone Wireless plan...and then sign up with a new broadband provider once I finally move in.

Howdy,

Not sure if I'll be any real help... I might learn something from other replies as well!

Anyhoo, if both cabinets referenced are off the same Telecom exchange as stated then availability of the number at the new address shouldn't be an issue.

I'm not all that familiar with Orcons plan structures so can't speak to the plan change sorry...

Seems odd that the 5 week gap is a problem for Orcon... you'd think 5 weeks notice would get you a medal for superb planning! At the very least this could be done by a complete disconnection and then Orcon issue a new service request to Telecom Wholesale for the same number at the new address?

Worst case scenario, get a new number and request the old one on Customerlink from Telecom for a while. $20+GST per month plus call costs to forward calls from the old number to your new one. Not sure if Orcon offer a similar service.

Complicated simplicity!? Blah.

I'd be surprised if that could not be done! When we shifted and were delayed from moving in to the new destination TelstraClear essentially parked our number for us, for a minimal monthly charge. Good luck.

@keewee01 - I'm glad I wasn't alone in thinking that a number parking service would be pretty standard...the Orcon CSR didn't seem to think it was possible unfortunately.

@Fo0L - I agree, same exchange should mean same phone number available...no idea why it was made out as a challenge to achieve!

It would seem that Orcon doesn't offer the number forwarding / number parking services that you'd expect (or it doesn't train its CSR's on them).

Port the number to WorldxChange to VFX only service. Divert calls to what ever number you like. Then when you move to new address, either go with WorldxChange Fusion, or talk to Orcon about bringing the number back.
Costs: $20 number port fee
$11.25 per month VFX cost
$$ diversion costs if not to another local number

If you need help with the WorldxChange option, send me a message and I can sort you via their Dealer Chanel and make it all easy for you.

@coffeebaron - excellent. Keeps my number, diverts my calls and costs very little!

I'll probably send you a message soon.

I would do the same, but with 2talk as I cant in any honesty support a company like world exchange, whereas 2talk have been quite upfront and good to deal with.

errr...is there something in general about World Exchange that I'm unaware of?

Or was it a specfic experience?

My parents-in-law were moving just a few km away but couldn't keep their (very) old number. I ported their number to WorldxChange and they are happy with the old number in their new place...

ask anyone who was trying to use their internet service thru the worst of their performance problems how it was, how they made people do needless troubleshooting when they knew that it was their lack of capacity how they feel about world exchange.

That crap has irreperarbly damaged their reputation to the point that I would never consider using them.

I'd call it like this...

Xnet's performance/support for their ADSL products = very bad
Xnet's performance/support for VFX = very good

strange that, I moved 5km (as the crow flies) from one side of Palmerston North to the other, and I could keep the same number.  In fact, that number has been moved three times around various parts of town.  All depends on the exchange I guess.

We're with Telstraclear - luckily we could take our number with us over 20km....same region - different city :) - that was a couple of years ago now though.

We use the vodafone wireless service for our 'landline' for our business and that works well - I don't think I would bother changing to a landline for my business phone, but then again, we don't make a lot of calls with a landline - mostly incoming and use our cellphones for most outgoing calls.

Yip it depends on the exchange. If you're moving exchanges you typically can't take a number with you.
